Brovary strike kills 3
Russia launched an attack on Ukraine overnight on Aug. 8 that killed three people, including a child, and injured three others in Kyiv Oblast’s Brovary district, according to Kyiv Regional Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko.
““Unfortunately, three people were killed, including a child. Three more were injured, also including a child,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.”
Tkachenko wrote on Telegram that the attack caused damage at three locations in Brovary, with falling debris damaging a private home, outbuildings and vehicles, and a fire breaking out at a non-residential building.
The Kyiv City Military Administration later warned of incoming ballistic missiles and declared an air raid alert in Kyiv due to the use of ballistic missiles, instructing residents to take shelter.
Ukraine’s Air Force had earlier warned of Russian attack drones approaching the capital, reporting “UAVs heading toward Kyiv from the north,” and later reporting a “threat of ballistic weapon use from the north.”
The Kyiv Independent reported that explosions were first heard in the city at around 12:45 a.m. local time and that less than 15 minutes later another round of blasts rocked the city.
Air-defense strain and warnings
Tkachenko told reporters that “Russia continues to terrorize the civilian population,” framing the Brovary strike as part of ongoing attacks on civilians.
The BBC reported that Russia attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones, killing at least 21 people, and said Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that interceptors “could have saved lives”.
The BBC also said Kyiv and the surrounding region experienced the deadliest strikes it had seen this year overnight, with 17 people reported dead, and added that Ukraine had not reported intercepting any of the missiles in the overnight attack.
Ukraine’s Air Force data cited by the BBC said Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles and four anti-ship missiles during the attack on the capital, and that air defence systems intercepted 98 of 115 drones.
The Kyiv Independent described the attack as coming as the capital faced a critical air defense shortage that left Kyiv exposed to Russian ballistic missiles.
UN condemnation and wider toll
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the massive Russian strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region, with his spokesperson Farhan Haq stating that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure must cease immediately.

Ukrainian authorities said the attack killed at least 17 people and injured a further 44, and the UN described the strikes on populated areas as an alarming escalation.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that between January and June 2026, 1,396 civilians were killed and 7,978 were injured, and said Russian long-range attacks were the main factor behind the increase.
In its broader assessment, UN News said Guterres expressed concern that recent strikes by both Russia and Ukraine have resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties and called it “a clear violation of international humanitarian law.”
The UN also said humanitarian workers are already delivering shelter support and psychosocial assistance in Donetsk, while noting that humanitarian workers must never be targeted.
