Kramatorsk bus strike

Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least 35 people and injured more than 30 others across Ukraine overnight and into Thursday morning, according to Ukrainian authorities. Russian forces struck a passenger bus in Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region, and the city council said at least 30 people were killed and 18 were injured in that single strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, "This morning, Russia hit an ordinary public transport stop in Kramatorsk with an aerial bomb."

Ukrainian authorities also tied the wider overnight toll to a deadly Wednesday in which at least 25 people were killed in strikes across the country, including 22 in an attack on a residential building in Pryluky. Ukrainian officials said at least four victims in Pryluky were children, as the death toll from Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past 48 hours reached at least 60.

Competing death tolls

Ukrainian authorities said a Russian strike on two buses in Kramatorsk killed at least 33 people and wounded 18 others, and police said the buses were hit with a glide bomb. The Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin accused Russia of “deliberately targeting civilians,” writing on Telegram that "For them [the Russians], a bus with passengers is an attractive target precisely because one strike can kill as many people as possible,". Kramatorsk City Council called the bus stop attack "another horrific crime committed by the Russian army against the civilian population" and added, "Once again, the Russians have struck a location where there are absolutely no military targets."

DW reported that the region's prosecutor's office put the death toll at at least 30, after Zelenskiy had announced in a prior update that at least 12 people had died. El País said the attack killed at least 33 people, while the Donetsk region prosecutor's office provided the latest balance and Zelenskiy described it as a bus stop.

Broader strikes and next steps

Ukraine said Russian attacks also hit other parts of the country, with the death toll from Wednesday's missile attack on a residential building in Pryluky rising to 22, including five children, according to Governor Vyacheslav Chaus. Zelenskyy said search and rescue efforts in Pryluky had been completed and added, "And even after such a brutal attack, the Russians continued striking our regions." Ukrainian forces also struck a data centre owned by Russia's Yandex, and Yandex said the attack on its Sasovo hub caused a fire and forced it to suspend operations at the site.

The ABC account said Zelenskyy urged US President Donald Trump to step up pressure on Russia, as negotiators were set to visit the United States for talks on Friday and Saturday. The ABC account also said the killings overnight brought the death toll from Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past 48 hours to at least 60, following the earlier Wednesday strikes.
