Drone Near Luzon
A small Lightfish naval drone from Seasats filmed a close encounter with a Chinese Type 052D guided-missile destroyer while the PLAN ship was 105 km northwest of Luzon in Philippine waters on June 16, according to Reuters video obtained by the outlet.

TWZ reported that Seasats CEO Mike Flanigan said the incident took place about 73 miles northeast of the Philippine island of Luzon, and that the Lightfish tracked the Chinese vessel on radar from a range of ~10 nm and visually to a minimum range of several hundred meters.
The same episode was described by Reuters as occurring around 4 p.m. local time Saturday as workers were completing a late shift.
In the Bashi Channel, CNN identified the footage as a Chinese Type 052D guided-missile destroyer during a test mission, and the clip was described as rare close-up footage from a 12-foot commercial sea drone.
YJ-20 on Type 052D
China’s state media highlighted footage of a Type 052D destroyer firing a YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile, with Global Times saying it marked the first time the weapon was seen on a Type 052 vessel.
Global Times said the YJ-20 was launched from the vertical launch system on the bow deck of the Type 052D destroyer, and described the missile as using a cold-launch method, meaning it is ejected before its engine ignites.
The Global Times report also said the YJ-20 debuted at the 2025 V-Day military parade on September 3, 2025, and that the trailer for the documentary "Zhìshèng" would begin airing from Thursday as the PLA’s 99th anniversary of founding approaches.
Defense Express noted that PRC at a recent press conference emphasized the need to avoid approaching PLAN warships, saying "this may lead to accidental incidents at sea or in air."
Rules, Reach, and Risk
The Lightfish encounter was framed by TWZ as raising questions about rules of engagement for navies and even merchant vessels when they happen upon USVs that come close without explanation or clear intent.

TWZ also said the Luzon Strait sits south of Taiwan and north of the Philippines, in a channel that provides access from the greater Pacific to the South China Sea and vice-versa, and described it as highly trafficked by major military players and commercial shipping.
On the missile side, the Global Times report said the YJ-20 can hit surface vessels via a nearly vertical angle like a ballistic missile and that with its hypersonic speed it is very difficult to intercept, according to Zhang Junshe.
In parallel, Defense Express said it remains unknown whether the Lightfish drone remained unnoticed by Chinese destroyer crew or they managed to identify it visually or with available standard assets, while also noting that the YJ-20 integration expands the number of ships that could use the weaponry.
