Sliman Mansour dies at 79
Sliman Mansour, the Palestinian artist whose work became a symbol of resistance, died at age 79, with his family announcing the public death notice on Monday, 24 August 2026 via a verified Instagram account.

Al Jazeera said Mansour’s art preserved Palestinian culture and heritage while documenting decades of struggle, displacement, and perseverance, and it also framed his death as the passing of an “iconic Palestinian artist.”
ABC Color reported that no cause of death was indicated in the public announcement, and it placed Mansour’s birth in Birzeit near Ramala, Cisjordania, in 1947.
ABC Color added that Mansour graduated from the Academia de Artes y Diseño Bezalel in Jerusalén in 1970, and it described his later co-founding of the movimiento Nuevas Visiones in 1987 and his co-founding of the Centro de Arte Al-Wasiti in 1994 in Jerusalén Este.
Funeral in Birzeit
Palestinians mourned Sliman Mansour at a public funeral in the occupied West Bank after he died on Monday, aged 79, according to Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera reported that Mansour was a pioneer of Palestinian art including one of the Arab world’s most famous paintings, ‘Camel of Hardship,’ and it identified Nida Ibrahim reporting from Birzeit in the occupied West Bank.
BBC said the funeral took place at a packed church in Birzeit, near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, and it described Mansour as best known for bright and powerful paintings depicting the Palestinian landscape, with olive groves and citrus trees.
BBC also quoted Vera Tamari recalling, "He was actually the main Palestinian artist, the best known locally and internationally," and it added that Tamari said Mansour’s work showed "Palestine in all its beauty and hope".
Legacy and what’s at risk

Hyperallergic reported that Mansour’s family announced the death in an Instagram story post on Monday, August 24, after an earlier announcement that the artist was in “critical condition,” and it quoted the family writing, "To the world, he leaves behind a life filled with beauty, memory, and a legacy that will continue to live through all those he touched,".
Hyperallergic also said Mansour told it in a 2023 interview, "Anything that is Palestinian, even just being here, breathing and thinking, is a sensitive matter to the Israelis because they built their narrative around denying our existence," and it described him as having been jailed, beaten, and threatened by the Israeli government throughout his career.
In the BBC account of his funeral, Amer Shomali, a visual artist and director general of the Palestinian Museum, said, "He was the mastermind of creating a Palestine that unifies us all as Palestinians, something that we long for and we work to live in," linking Mansour’s influence to the Palestinian pursuit of self-determination, independence and statehood.
