Carson wins Nobel

The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 to Canadian author Anne Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.” In Stockholm, Ingrid Carlberg said Carson was in Iceland “listening to the wind” when the academy reached her to notify her of the win.

Anne Carson told the Icelandic public broadcaster RUV, “I think they’re all crazy.” Anders Olsson, chairman of the Swedish Academy’s Nobel committee for Literature, praised Carson’s writing for “playful and ironic works that move not only between classical and modern poetry but also between different genres and artforms.”

Life, work, and quotes

Anne Carson, born in Toronto in 1950, was described as a Canadian poet, essayist and translator whose work often crosses the boundaries between poetry, fiction and scholarship.

The Nobel Prize committee said Carson was selected for a lifetime’s body of work, and the BBC reported that the winner receives 12 million Swedish kronor (£900,000, $1.2m).

Carson said she was “taken by surprise but very happy,” and she described her conversation with the academy as “rather halting.”

Carson also said, “I’ll get a sticker on the front of my book. Stickers help.”

What the award means

The Swedish Academy said Carson’s work fuses the classical and the modern, and the Nobel committee described her approach as “playful dialogue with the classical tradition.”

In Iceland, Ingrid Carlberg said she could hear Carson’s surprise in her voice, and Anders Olsson said Carson’s method of writing leads to “playful and ironic works” across genres.

The BBC said Carson is celebrated for works that cross boundaries between poetry, fiction and scholarship, while the AP said Carson won for playful, genre-blending works that fuse the classical and the modern.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is presented to laureates on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, and the BBC said the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, with the Nobel’s economics prize following on Monday.
