Homs refinery plot foiled
Syrian security forces said they foiled a plot to target the Homs oil refinery in central Syria, arresting a cell affiliated with Lebanon’s Hezbollah armed group. Syria’s General Intelligence Service said on X that “the preemptive security operation” was carried out in cooperation with the country’s Internal Security Forces.
The Internal Security Forces said the operation resulted in the “arrest of the involved cell members and the seizure of explosive devices in their possession, prepared for use to target the refinery.” Hezbollah denied the Syrian accusations in a statement, reiterating that it does not have any presence on Syrian territory and is not involved in “any activity that undermines the security and stability of Syria.”
Hezbollah denies, Syria cites
Hezbollah’s Media Relations Office issued a statement denying the Syrian Internal Security Forces’ claims and reiterating that Hezbollah has no presence or affiliations on Syrian territory. Hezbollah said in its statement, “Hezbollah has no presence or affiliations whatsoever on Syrian territory and has no connection to any activity that undermines Syria’s security and stability.”
Syrian Internal Security Forces said the operation came “after meticulous follow-up” and described it as a “terrorist plot” targeting the Homs refinery. The Internal Security Forces also said the operation was part of efforts “to pursue terrorist cells, foil their plans, and protect vital facilities and the country’s economic resources.”
Energy stakes and wider pattern
The Homs refinery is described as Syria’s first oil refining refinery, established in 1959 and located seven kilometers west of the city of Homs, covering an area of about four square kilometers. The refinery’s refining capacity reached about 110,000 barrels of oil per day, and the project narrative said its annual production capacity increased to about 5.7 million tons.
Syrian authorities framed the foiled plot as part of an ongoing series of security operations against networks and cells they say are connected to Hezbollah inside Syrian territory. The Internal Security Forces said the operation targeted a facility that plays a role in securing petroleum products for the local market alongside the Banias refinery, while the security statement described the seized explosives as prepared to execute the attack.
