The Office Star Lucy Davis Says Stage 4 Breast Cancer Metastasized to Her Bones

Lucy Davis, one of the stars of the U.K. version of “The Office,” said she has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized to her bones, including her spine, right hip, and ribs.

In her Instagram post, Davis wrote, “The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo,” and she said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago.

Davis also described the first sign as “rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny,” and she said she “almost didn’t bother getting it checked.”

She said she sometimes needs to use a wheelchair because “Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard,” while she tries to keep living “in as fun a way as I possibly can.”

Davis said one of the most important things helping her was humour, writing, “I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible,” and she added that she wanted them “to not treat me like a sick person.”

In the same post, she said, “There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell,” and she described being “not scared of whatever comes next” and “at peace with it.”

TV Insider reported that in a posted video Davis could be seen ringing a bell, and she recited, “Ring this bell, three times well, it’s the toll to clearly say my treatments are done.”

The Guardian also quoted Davis saying she is “trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can,” alongside her message about continuing to work as an actress.

Davis said she will continue working for animal rights and told others, “For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well,” while also saying she would like to keep working as an actress.

In Sky News’ account of reactions, Piers Morgan called the announcement “devastating,” praising Davis’s “courage in talking about this so honestly,” and Laura Aikman said Davis is “wise and funny.”

Sky News also reported that Danielle Hambridge replied that she had lived with stage four breast cancer for “nearly eight years,” placing Davis’s diagnosis in a longer personal timeline.
