Stage 4, Metastasis
Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, said she has incurable stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs.
In an Instagram post, Davis wrote, "A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, which has metastasized to my bones."
She added that the cancer is incurable and "too late for chemo," and described the initial sign as "a kind of hard spot. Really tiny."
Davis said she is trying to live out whatever might be left of her life "in as fun a way as I possibly can," and she told followers she is "not scared of whatever comes next" and is "at peace with it."
Humour, Wheelchair, Bell
Davis said one of the most important things that has helped her is humour, writing, "I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible" and to "not treat me like a sick person." She also described how pain can affect her day-to-day movement, saying, "Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard, and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes."
In the video accompanying her announcement, Davis rang a bell and recited a rhyme, including the line, "Ring this bell three times well." She told fans, "I’ll see my Gracie sooner than expected," and said leaving her physical body "just means going home," with grieving "far harder" for her family than for her.
Support and Continuing Work
Davis said she intends to keep up her work for animal rights and also wants to keep working as an actress, calling acting "one of the biggest joys" in her life. She wrote, "I’m still going to keep up all my work for animal rights," and added, "I still would like to keep working."
The BBC and other outlets also framed her announcement through her career, noting she played Dawn Tinsley in The Office, which ran from 2001 to 2003, and that she later appeared in Shaun of the Dead and Wonder Woman. In reaction to her disclosure, Sky News reported tributes including Piers Morgan calling it "devastating" and praising Davis’s "courage in talking about this so honestly," while Casualty star Laura Aikman said Davis was "wise and funny" and added "Hope you're receiving all of this love coming your way."
