Trump confirms strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island during the election day. He defends immigration policy, claiming border controls reduced migrant flows and expulsions.

Trump, ICE, and strikes

Donald Trump told Fox News that “When I arrived, the borders were open. Millions and millions of people were flooding in,” and he said he “expelled a lot of them” as he defended his immigration record on Election Day.

Donald Trump also said he intends to end security aid to Israel, amounting to $3.8 billion per year, and he told Fox News, “We give Israel $4 billion a year, and we concluded an agreement months ago under which we would stop.”

Massoud Pezeshkian warned at a cabinet meeting that resuming hostilities would benefit “no one,” adding that his government is working to find a way out of the conflict “through dialogue.”

Donald Trump confirmed strikes against an anti-aircraft infrastructure in Iran, saying, “As soon as it was finished, we struck it last night, very nicely,” and American media reported that the limited strikes hit an Iranian island in the strategic Hormuz Strait.

The United States conducted limited strikes on an Iranian island in the strategic Hormuz Strait, and the Wall Street Journal reported that the strikes targeted Monday, on the eve of the midterms, the island of Qeshm.

Midterms open, seats at stake

Americans voted in the 2026 midterm elections as polls opened across the country, with the first polls due to close at 6 p.m. ET and with more than 59 million Americans already voted early, according to the University of Florida Voting Lab.

All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats were on the ballot, while 36 states were electing governors, and CBS News highlighted 11 battleground Senate races including Iowa and Texas.

The BBC described Iowa as a Republican stronghold at risk, noting that Donald Trump had won the state comfortably in three straight presidential elections and that Iowans had not elected a Democratic Senator since 2008.

For governor in Iowa, Democrat Rob Sand faced Republican candidate Zach Lahn, and for US Senate, Democrat Josh Turek ran against former TV news host Ashley Hinson.

The Justice Department deployed around 1,000 election monitors in 126 jurisdictions in all 50 states, and CNN said Democrats needed a net gain of three seats to capture the House and four seats in the Senate.

Counting issues and broader tensions

Fulton County reported ballot-scanner problems in New York’s battleground 17th District, and CBS News said the county reported two separate ballot machine issues affecting two polling locations and roughly 1,000 early-voting ballots. Fulton County initially said it would ask its election board to formally adopt modified tabulation procedures, then said it would ask the election board to rescan the affected ballots in public view, with officials discussing the plan at a meeting at 6:30 p.m. In Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum said Texas authorities’ decision to claim as their own nine islands in the Rio Grande was tied to electoral interests, and she said, “First, the Government of Texas does not decide.”

Sheinbaum said the delimitation of the territories falls to the International Boundary and Water Commission (CILA), and she stressed, “All of that is decided through a commission,” as the controversy unfolded during the U.S. midterm elections. Boursorama said investors stayed cautious as U.S. midterm elections and American strikes against Iran’s island of Qeshm kept markets wary, and it quoted ING analysts writing, “Tuesday will be nothing more than the eve of a day that will be much more important.”
