Trump orders DOJ probe
President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice to investigate Democrats for “threatening a lot of people” after Democrats won control of both chambers of the US Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Trump wrote on social media that Democrats’ actions amounted to a “criminal act” without providing evidence, and he added that “This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this.”
“Trump wrote, adding that some of his cabinet have been threatened with impeachment.”
The Hill reported that Attorney General Todd Blanche dodged questions on whether he would open investigations into Democratic members of Congress after Trump’s remarks about a “criminal act.” Blanche told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “They’ve threatened donors,” and he argued that talks of impeachment and going after private companies were “not oversight.”
Hamilton rejects two-year probe
Sen.-elect Adam Hamilton said he would be “deeply disappointed” if Democrats spent two years investigating members of the Trump administration.
Hamilton told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that “The bigger priority for me” was “please help us with the cost of living,” and he said the new Congress should immediately focus on ending the war in Iran and “claw[ing] back tariffs policies.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters Wednesday that “Whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court and entangle him in legislative razor wire.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders agreed with Hamilton on “Meet the Press,” saying, “We cannot spend all of our time investigating Trump. We have to stand up for working-class families, make a real difference in their lives.”
Oversight, impeachment, and risk
The Hill reported that Reps. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and Deborah Ross (D-N.C.) floated the idea of impeaching Blanche after Democrats regained control of the House and Senate.
Blanche told Dana Bash that “You have free speech in this country,” but he said “when the threats become so vile and so dangerous” the line must be drawn.
Al Jazeera said Trump’s order came as Democratic lawmakers and newly elected candidates said they would pursue probes into the Trump family’s financial dealings, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and investigations into Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Al Jazeera also said Democratic Representative Robert Garcia of California posted “LAWYER UP” after it was clear Democrats would take the House, with the House Oversight Committee expected to have broad jurisdiction and power to conduct investigations in January.
