Iran War Discussed
Donald Trump said he spoke with Xi Jinping about the war against Iran during the Washington summit, and he told reporters that after the summit there would be “good news” for American farmers. Xi Jinping urged Trump to dialogue with Iran to quickly end the war, and Xi also urged the United States and Iran to resolve their problems “through negotiation as soon as possible,” according to Xinhua.
Trump confirmed that he and Xi discussed the war on Iran, and he said, “We did,” when asked if they talked about the Iranian file. Trump also said he expected “excellent results” on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as he toured the National Archives building in Washington on the final day of Xi’s state visit.
Negotiation Pressure and Assurances
U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said Trump told Xi that any direct or indirect support for Iran was “totally unacceptable,” and Perdue said Trump reiterated it “clearly yesterday.”
Perdue told CNBC that Beijing had given assurances, and he said, “They assured us yesterday that they are not doing that.”
Xi Jinping, through a translator, said, “For the rest of this year, there will be two more opportunities to meet,” adding, “I welcome your visit to China, Mr. President and Madam First Lady.”
Trump said he would meet Xi again in November in China and then at the G20 summit in December in Miami, Florida, and he posted the schedule on his Truth Social network.
Hormuz, Sanctions, and Stakes
Fox News Digital quoted House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast saying that if Trump can secure that China will stop arming Iran, “then the president will have done something very important for affordability.” Mast said Trump has moved “over 2,000 ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” while Iran “has moved nothing,” and he argued that global oil markets still see instability.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Baghdad will negotiate with the United States regarding sanctions to enable services to Iranian flights, and he said Iraqi officials informed the Iranian side of the ban on flights. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran “will not show any flexibility in its nuclear program,” even if the United States agrees to Iran’s proposal to reopen the Hormuz Strait.
