Ukraine Navy Destroys Russian Naval Drone in First-Ever Black Sea Unmanned Boat Battle

Drone duel in Black Sea
Ukraine said it destroyed a Russian naval drone in what its Navy described as the first-ever naval battle between unmanned boats in the Black Sea, with the operation carried out jointly with Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, HUR, which spotted the Russian vessel before the Ukrainian drone attacked.

The Ukrainian Navy said its Sargan-3000 USV employed a 12.7-mm Protector remote weapon station to destroy the Russian drone, and it released video footage of the operation on its official Telegram account.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the Ukrainian Navy wrote on Telegram that “Units of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) detected the target and the Ukrainian Navy’s Sargan 3000 unmanned boat… successfully destroyed it,” adding that the Navy said “This is the first naval battle in history between unmanned boats.”T
The Kyiv Independent likewise said the Russian drone was destroyed by a Ukrainian Sargan-3000 unmanned boat equipped with a 12.7-mm Protector remote weapons station, and it described the encounter as a historic first.
Kurdistan24 also framed the event as an all-drone clash, saying Ukraine’s Navy described it as “history's first all-drone naval battle” in which one of its uncrewed naval vessels detected, engaged and sank a Russian unmanned craft.
Border strikes and negotiations
While Ukraine and Russia fought at sea with naval drones, Al Jazeera reported that Russia launched 863 drones at Ukraine over the last 24 hours and that Russia shot down 389 Ukrainian drones during the night, citing Ukraine’s General Staff and the country’s Ministry of Defence.
Al Jazeera said Russia carried out two drone attacks near Ukraine’s border with NATO member Poland, and it reported that the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing point had briefly stopped working after an attack on a truck about 0.8km from Poland before the crossing resumed operations.
In the same reporting, Polish and Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone struck a Warsaw-bound train near the Polish border in Ukraine but caused no casualties, while the Russian Defence Ministry said it struck Ukrainian logistics and energy facilities overnight.
Al Jazeera also reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said three-way negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States could take place in October, quoting him: “We do not rule out such a possibility; we are talking about the foreseeable future.”
The Institute for the Study of War described a separate September 13 drone strike against a train leaving Ukraine and infrastructure at the Yahodyn border crossing on the Ukrainian-Polish border, and it said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on September 13 that Russia conducted a drone strike against a passenger train locomotive and a gas station in Volyn Oblast near the Ukrainian-Polish border.
Wider war and NATO pressure
The drone duel and the broader drone campaign fed into a wider contest over NATO’s borders, with the Institute for the Study of War saying Russia is escalating drone incursions into European airspace to intimidate NATO into abandoning its support for Ukraine.
“Russia’s terror “knocking” on NATO’s doors”
It added that Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiha stated on September 13 that Russian strikes against the Yahodyn border crossing are Russia’s terror “knocking” on NATO’s doors, and it said Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on Western officials to provide Ukraine with necessary air defense systems after the incident.
The same assessment said Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia is intensifying its strikes and increasingly striking targets closer to NATO borders, and it called on the West to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses and provide Ukraine with military assistance.
In parallel, CNN reported that Ukrainian drone expertise has been deployed beyond Ukraine, with CNN saying “Some 15 Ukrainian specialists have been deployed to the junta-led country in Africa’s Sahel region” to assist local rebel forces fighting Russian troops.
CNN also quoted a Ukrainian drone operator in Mali describing remote coordination, saying, “The signal from their drone comes to me over the internet, and I immediately tell them via radio what to do and where to fly,” as it described how Ukraine is turning drone experience into a foreign policy tool.
