Drones Hit Moscow Region

A Ukrainian drone attack on an industrial area in the Moscow region killed five people and injured 10 others, according to regional governor Andrey Vorobyov, who said the attack occurred in the Chekhov district south of the capital.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it downed at least 320 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over the Moscow and Leningrad regions, as the attacks unfolded across multiple districts.

In the same reporting, Leningrad governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said in posts to Telegram that at least 17 Ukrainian drones were shot down over his region, and he added that damage had been recorded in the warehouse area of Krasny Bor.

ABC News also reported that Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 136 drones and one ballistic missile into Ukraine overnight into Tuesday morning, of which 117 drones were intercepted or otherwise suppressed.

Ukraine’s Drone ‘Human Safari’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a video of a street vendor being hunted by a drone before it exploded, and the BBC said the man in the video verified by the BBC was 52-year-old street vegetable seller Yuriy.

The BBC reported that the deployment of remotely-operated drones against civilians has often been used by Russians to terrify residents of front line areas, and it described the attack as happening in Kherson, which sits only a few miles from the front line.

In the same BBC account, Russia has repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilians, while the BBC said Zelenskyy posted the video showing the man trying to flee as the drone circles his vehicle before it strikes.

AP reported that Zelenskyy posted a video he said showed a Russian drone hunting a man selling vegetables from a street stall in the southern city of Kherson, and it said the man suffered wounds to his back, legs and arms.

AP also said Russia’s Defense Ministry did not immediately reply to an Associated Press request for comment, as it described drone attacks on civilians surging since the war began.

Escalation and Intercepts

In Germany, the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near a runway at Leipzig/Halle airport prompted German interior minister Alexander Dobrindt to warn of a "new threat" spilling over from the Ukraine war.

The Independent reported that Germany opened a counterterrorism investigation after the drone was discovered by airport workers in a restricted cargo area near the southern runway, and it said flights were suspended and several aircraft, including some owned by DHL, were diverted.

The Independent also tied the airport incident to Zelensky’s plea for help, saying Zelensky told allies that ballistic missile interceptors “could have saved the lives” of 17 people killed in Kyiv on Tuesday night.

In Ukraine’s wider battlefield picture, Al Jazeera reported that Russian strikes on eastern Ukraine killed at least six people overnight while Moscow shot down 605 Ukrainian drones over its territory and the annexed Crimean Peninsula.

Al Jazeera added that Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its forces intercepted and destroyed 605 Ukrainian aerial drones during the night, while local authorities reported a logistics centre belonging to Wildberries was “slightly damaged”.
