Tankers hit near Kharg
U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers on Tuesday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days, according to U.S. Central Command.

CENTCOM said four of the tankers were in the Gulf of Oman and one was hit near Kharg Island, and it added that "American forces directed the crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable."
Iran said it retaliated by launching missiles at Jordan’s Al Azraq military base, according to the semi-official Fars news agency cited by NBC News.N
NBC News also reported that Jordanian air defense systems intercepted 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles and that two missiles fell in unpopulated areas, with no casualties reported by Jordanian state media.N
Threats and warnings
Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters commander Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi said Iranian forces would "heavily target" U.S. interests in the region if Iranian vessels were attacked, according to state media cited by Ynetnews.Y
Abdollahi also said, "I announce that any attack on Iran’s oil tankers will lead to attacks on American bases in the region," as the U.S. continued strikes tied to attempted missile attacks on a U.S. Navy warship.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the U.S. would respond every time Iran targeted its naval ships, telling reporters, "they're going to lose tankers," according to CNN.
CNN reported that Iran launched missiles toward Jordan and that Jordan’s air defenses intercepted 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles while the other two fell in unpopulated areas, with no casualties reported by the Jordanian army.
Strait of Hormuz stakes
The conflict’s battleground remained the Strait of Hormuz, where the U.S. and Iran have attacked tankers while both sides jostle for control, according to NBC News.N

The IRGC Navy warned crews of oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to immediately leave their vessels, saying the ships could be targeted in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iranian tankers, according to NDTV.
NDTV also quoted Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the U.S. would not allow Iran’s attacks to go unanswered, and it included Danny Citrinowicz’s warning that "There is no kinetic solution to the Strait of Hormuz problem," as the tit-for-tat escalations continued.
