Missiles Near Kharg Island
An Iranian tanker was hit by four U.S. missiles near Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil export hub, in the Gulf, Tasnim reported from Kharg on Saturday.

The reports placed the attack in the area of Kharg Island’s anchorage, and Reuters noted that U.S. President Donald Trump had previously said on August 31 that Kharg Island was being "blown to smithereens".
Connected to India also reported that Al Jazeera, citing Iranian news outlet Khabar Fouri, said the tanker was struck by four U.S. missiles and that an evacuation operation was underway, with no casualties reported.
The Connected to India report added that fighting between the United States and Iran had sharply escalated after a month-long lull, with the two sides exchanging strikes amid growing concerns over civilian casualties.
No Confirmation, Evacuation
Iranian media accounts described the same incident with variations in framing, with i24NEWS saying Iranian Student News Network reported a small Iranian oil tanker was hit by a missile attack and that there were no casualties.
i24NEWS also said there was no immediate confirmation from Washington, while Reuters reported that U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Al Jazeera’s reporting, as relayed by Connected to India, said an evacuation operation was underway after the reported missile strike near Kharg Island.
Reuters further reported that Iranian authorities have vowed a strong response if Kharg is attacked, and it linked the episode to broader disruptions after a U.S. blockade of Iranian oil exports began in mid-April.
Connected to India placed the incident within a wider escalation that followed U.S. strikes on rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz, days after Trump said American forces had cleared mines from the maritime trade route.
Oil Exports and Escalation
The reported attack landed near Kharg Island, which Reuters described as Iran’s key oil export hub and said handled 90% of its crude exports before the war, with flows disrupted since a U.S. blockade of Iranian oil exports began in mid-April.

Reuters said a U.S. attack on Kharg would heap further pressure on Iran's oil industry and its wider economy, which it described as already reeling from the U.S. naval blockade.
The Connected to India report said Kharg Island is strategically important to Iran’s oil industry and handles a major share of the country’s crude oil exports, while also stating there had been no official confirmation of the reported missile strike so far.
In parallel, Reuters reported Trump’s August 31 statement accompanied by an AI-generated video that Kharg Island was being "blown to smithereens," and it noted that Trump had said on June 11 he wanted to take over Kharg Island before later saying a threatened U.S. military operation there was off the table for now.
Reuters also tied the episode to the interim agreement aimed at ending the war signed on June 17, while noting that a U.S. attack on Kharg would come as the conflict’s maritime pressure continued around the Strait of Hormuz.
