Utah tops 2026 list
U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best States rankings placed Utah at No. 1 overall for the fourth consecutive year, with the study evaluating all 50 states across eight categories.
“This eighth edition of our Best States rankings compiles 71 metrics”
The rankings use 71 metrics across Education, health care, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, natural environment, and crime and corrections, and US News said the best state is given 100 points while the worst is given zero.
US News also said it surveyed people across the country on how satisfied they were with their state's performance, and that between 2018 and 2025 it surveyed more than 56,000 people across the United States.
In the top tier, the states among the top five best are Utah, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska, while the bottom of the barrel includes Arkansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Mississippi, Alaska and Louisiana.
The No. 2 and No. 3 finishers in the overall standings were South Dakota and Minnesota, respectively, according to the 2026 results described by USA TODAY.
Category leaders and gaps
The 2026 overall standings also came with category-specific placements, including Utah ranking No. 2 for economy and fiscal stability, No. 4 for infrastructure, No. 6 for education, and No. 7 for crime and corrections.
Utah’s Natural Environment placement was No. 48, and the U.S. News Q&A with Eric Litke said Utah kept its No. 1 finish despite that Natural Environment ranking.
In the same 2026 framework, Louisiana ranked No. 50 overall and was dead last in Crime & Corrections and 49th in both Economy and Natural Environment, according to U.S. News’ Eric Litke.
U.S. News’ methodology described how Education and Healthcare received the highest weights at around 16%, while Natural Environment and Crime & Corrections received the lowest at around 9%.
The Coloradoan reported that Colorado ranked No. 1 in education in the 2026 Best States rankings, while overall Colorado was ranked the 17th best state in the nation with Utah taking the top position.
What officials and outlets say
U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO Eric Gertler said the rankings “objectively evaluate performance, identify opportunities for improvement and ways to learn from the successes of other states,” and he described the results as translating data into “actionable insights.”

Fox News Digital framed the 2026 results as a regional shift, quoting Gertler that “States in the Midwest and South generally moved up the rankings, while several Northeastern states fell substantially.”
WKMG in Orlando reported that Florida finished No. 8 overall in the 2026 report, placing the state in the national Top 10, and listed Florida’s category ranks including Education No. 3 and Opportunity No. 47.
Across the same 2026 rankings, the Morris County NJ News outlet said New Jersey was named the 20th best state overall and that it earned its highest placement in education, coming in second out of all 50 states.
