Jumblatt rejects Israel deal

Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt said the “Framework Agreement [with Israel] is a unilateral agreement imposed by Israel on a Lebanese team, both inside and outside the country, that possesses limited expertise in law and diplomacy.”

Jumblatt: The Framework Agreement Was Dictated by Israel, Peace with It Is Impossible The Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt described the 'framework agreement' between Beirut and Tel Aviv on Tuesday as 'a unilateral agreement dictated by Israel,' and he considered that peace with it 'is impossible

Speaking during a meeting of the Druze community's sectarian council, Jumblatt stressed that “peace with Israel is impossible,” and he said the treaty “makes no mention of an Israeli withdrawal.”

Jumblatt also urged “the Lebanese state, if it has the means, to prepare new shelters in southern Lebanon,” while the U.S.-sponsored Lebanon-Israel framework agreement signed in Washington was described as aiming to end the conflict and establish sovereign relations.

The same framework agreement was said to lay out a roadmap for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, contingent upon the Lebanese Army disarming Hezbollah, and Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem rejected it as “null void.”

Druze council and wider split

In a speech at a meeting of the Druze religious council, Jumblatt argued that the proposed framework does not guarantee a ceasefire and said it “will not bring a ceasefire.”

The Druze religious council meeting was described as taking place amid discussions on the negotiations, the fate of the South, mechanisms to solidify a ceasefire, and preventing Lebanon from sliding into new clashes.

Sheikh Sami Abi al-Muni urged shaping a unified Lebanese position, saying “our loyalty must be to Lebanon alone,” and he warned against accusations of treachery and intimidation between groups.

In the same reporting, President Aoun was quoted saying, “We will not allow anyone to negotiate on Lebanon,” and it was also stated that there was “a faction under Iranian influence” and that Lebanon must begin to implement some provisions of the “framework formula.”

Shelters, sovereignty, and stakes

The Anadolu Ajansı report said the agreement signed under American auspices on June 26 envisions an Israeli “phased” withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territories, beginning with two experimental zones unnamed by the agreement, but it also said the agreement did not specify a timetable for withdrawal.

It further stated that the Lebanese Ministry of Health put the toll since March 2, 2026 at 4,304 dead and 12,203 wounded, and it said the framework agreement tied withdrawal to the Lebanese army taking full security responsibility and the disarmament of armed groups with particular reference to Hezbollah.

While Lebanese officials viewed the framework as a “first step” toward restoring the state's full sovereignty over its lands, Hezbollah was described as deeming it “nonexistent” and “humiliating,” arguing that tying the withdrawal to disarmament of Hezbollah “crossed red lines.”
