Wisconsin primary upset
David Crowley defeated Francesca Hong in the Wisconsin Democratic governor primary, giving the Democratic nomination to the Milwaukee County executive and setting up a general-election matchup with Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany.

Crowley, 40, will face Tiffany, 68, after Tiffany easily defeated political novice Andy Manske in the GOP primary, according to The Washington Post.
The BBC projected Crowley’s win over Hong as a narrow victory with a lead of less than half a percentage point with almost all votes counted, citing CBS News projections.
Crowley posted on X in the early hours of Wednesday that it was time to "get to work," and he reiterated his missions as "making life more affordable, strengthening our schools, creating good-paying jobs, and making sure opportunity reaches every corner of our state."
The Washington Post said Crowley’s win was a surprise comeback that dents a winning streak for the party’s left wing, after Hong led in polls by wide margins ahead of Tuesday’s election.
Unity and blame
At a press conference on Wednesday, David Crowley accepted the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor and vowed to unite a fractured coalition heading into November, thanking Francesca Hong and telling reporters, "I look forward to earning their support."
Crowley also rejected the progressive-versus-establishment framing, saying, "We may not agree on every policy. We may not use the same labels," while arguing that Democrats share goals like "safe communities" and "good-paying jobs."
The Guardian described Hong as a progressive challenger who had been scrutinized over past calls to abolish the police and cancel Thanksgiving, and it said Crowley took on Trump-backed Tom Tiffany in November.
Hong said in a statement on social media, "This campaign was not about getting one person into office," and she added, "It is about building a movement for permanent affordability and a government that puts working people first."
NPR reported that Crowley would be the state’s first Black governor if he wins in the fall, and it said he will face U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who is endorsed by President Trump and won his party’s primary decisively.
What’s at stake in November
The BBC said the Wisconsin governor’s race in November will be contested by Crowley and Tom Tiffany, who easily won the equivalent Republican contest, and it framed the matchup as closely fought during November’s midterm elections with wider implications for control of the U.S. Congress.

NPR reported that Republicans see the fall election as a chance to flip the governor’s mansion their way, while Democrats hope to hold it and turn at least one chamber of the legislature, where both are now controlled by the GOP.
The Washington Post said Hong’s campaign had promised to put a hold on building data centers, slam millionaires with higher taxes, and set up public grocery stores, while also facing scrutiny over social media calls to abolish the police and cancel Thanksgiving.
The Guardian said European fashion retailers are facing fresh questions over supply chain oversight after a fire at a factory that supplied them killed at least 33 garment workers in Bangladesh, linking the Wisconsin primary coverage to a separate global story in the same issue.
In Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Crowley will face U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in a Nov. 3 general election, and it quoted Hong’s Instagram message that she would "fully support him" in the November election.
