Independence Day stance
Ukraine marked its Independence Day in Kyiv while President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Telegram video that "Ukraine absolutely wants peace, but it’s not ready to simply surrender," and he rejected Russia’s demand that Kyiv cede the remaining part of the eastern Donbas area that is not in Russian hands.

Zelensky warned that Ukraine would not let Russia "seize the initiative and deceive Europe and the entire world" into thinking Donbas must be given up for the war to end.
The day’s events drew foreign leaders including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and European Council President Antonio Costa, with Burnham scheduled to co-chair a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” later on Monday.
The sources also tied the Independence Day messaging to the war’s scale and geography, saying that since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb 24, 2022, fighting raged along a 750-mile (1,200-km) frontline and that Moscow’s forces were threatening the strategic eastern city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk.
In the same Kyiv setting, the video showed Zelensky standing in the square in front of the golden-domed St Michael’s monastery where burned-out Russian tanks were on show.
Allies, aid, and attacks
As leaders gathered in Kyiv, the European Union released another €6.1 billion ($7.1 billion) to boost Ukraine’s air defenses, with the financing described as part of a €90 billion loan including €60 billion in military aid approved by the EU this spring.
In a separate Independence Day framing, La Unión Europea (UE) announced the unlocking of a new tranche of 6.100 millones de euros to reinforce Ukraine’s air defense and missile and ammunition capabilities, with Ursula von der Leyen saying "Europa está con ustedes hoy, mañana y todo el tiempo que sea necesario" on X.
On the ground, the EA WorldView update said Russia struck a factory of the US-owned multinational food company Mondelez International in the Sumy region, where two Russian drones hit the facility in the city of Trostianets, damaging the premises and injuring several employees.
France 24 reported that Ukraine’s Independence Day came as Ukraine hoped to obtain air defense equipment via a video conference chaired jointly by Britain, France, and Germany, while it also described Ukraine intensifying strikes on Russian territory in response to Russian shelling.
The same reporting tied the escalation to civilian impact, noting that a Russian strike on the Kharkiv region left three dead and that emergency responders rescued eight people and evacuated some, with some injured.
Negotiations and pressure
Zelensky’s Independence Day message linked Ukraine’s refusal to surrender territory to a push for negotiations and sanctions, saying Russia’s demand would not be enough to stop aggression and urging allies to give Ukraine “everything” needed to stop the war.

In the same Telegram video coverage, Zelensky told European leaders, "We are not asking you to fight for us, [but] to give Ukraine everything it needs to stop this war," and he also said he hoped that “all the contradictions and fears” the United States has regarding Russia would disappear.
The sources also described a diplomatic counterpressure, with the Independent Arabic account stating that the Kremlin said providing Britain with information to Ukraine about the manufacture of the SCALP missile would hinder progress toward peace.
That missile-related dispute was tied to Britain’s Independence Day visit, where the Independent Arabic text said Burnham’s office reported that Britain had agreed for MBDA to disclose secret information about British components used in the long-range SCALP missile to establish local assembly lines in Ukraine.
Across the reporting, the stakes were framed as whether Ukraine could compel Russia to negotiate while sustaining air defense and long-range strike capabilities, with Zelensky insisting that Ukraine would not cede the territory it still controls in Donetsk region as demanded by the Kremlin.
