Mamdani-backed primary wins

House Democrats faced rising anxiety after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsed candidates won three House primaries, including defeats of incumbent Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman.

CNN reported that Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey asked, “Obviously, the socialists had a big win last night. The question is, are we going to let them take over the party? Or are we going to stand up and fight back?”

NPR said Mamdani’s political gamble paid off as his endorsed candidates swept their primaries, with Darializa Avila Chevalier defeating Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th district and Brad Lander unseating Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th district.

NPR also said Mamdani backed Claire Valdez in the open race for New York’s 7th district, instead of Antonio Reynoso, and that the Associated Press race call described Chevalier’s win as narrow.

CNN added that Mamdani’s candidates ran on the same affordability message the party has embraced nationally, but that their victories highlighted “broader friction” over Democrats’ status-quo tactics in Washington.

Jeffries, donors, and Israel

CNN said House Democratic caucus members gathered for a private briefing by their party arm on Wednesday morning, where party leaders presented internal polling showing Trump underwater in key battlegrounds, and that no one brought up the Mamdani-backed candidate wins.

CNN quoted Rep. Greg Meeks, a New York Democrat close with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, saying, “Instead of us making sure we put all of our resources to fight Republicans and to fight Donald Trump, we’re using it to fight each other. It just doesn’t make common sense to me.”

HuffPost UK reported that Jeffries told CNN he and Mamdani “strongly” disagreed over his primary picks ahead of Election Day and said Mamdani has “work to do in terms of the conversations with members of Congress moving forward.”

HuffPost UK also described Mamdani’s framing after the Bronx press conference, saying the mayor said the results are a sign “New Yorkers are hungry for a new kind of politics” and that “working people should be at the heart” of their platforms.

In the same CNN report, Mamdani argued that “What we saw last night was a hunger for leaders who will be there on the front lines looking to make it easier for working people to afford life in the greatest city in the world,” while connecting cost-of-living issues to US military support for Israel.

Consequences for leadership

The New York Post said Jeffries suffered a blow Tuesday night after far-left congressional hopefuls defeated his preferred candidates in three New York primary election races, with wins by Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez in the Empire State’s 13th and 7th districts and Brad Lander in the 10th. The New York Post quoted Lander saying, “hold leadership accountable, and hold our party accountable, and hold myself accountable,” and it said those candidates were endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. NPR reported that the districts heavily favor Democrats, meaning Valdez, Lander and Avila Chevalier are expected to win their general election matchups in the fall.

CNN said top Democrats insisted they were unfazed by the party’s forming a “Zohran Mamdani wing,” but that Republicans were eager to tee up the Mamdani slate’s most controversial positions for attack ads in battlegrounds across the country. CNN also reported that one Democratic lawmaker in a battleground district told CNN they had begun having serious conversations with donors about leaving the party altogether, while Jeffries downplayed fears by pointing to his “working relationship” with the mayor of the city of New York.
