Iranian Army Says Trump Won’t Be Able To ‘Dictate’ the Length of Renewed War

No framing issues found.

A spokesman for Iran’s Army said on Sunday that if the US restarts the bombing campaign against the Islamic Republic, President Trump will not be able to “dictate” the length of the conflict and warned that the war could be longer than previous ones. “A potential future war could last longer than previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion,” said Brig.

Gen. Mohammad Akraminia, according to Iranian media. A similar statement was released on the social media channels of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. “Should Iran’s enemies resume military or terrorist attacks, it will be the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation that will determine when and under what conditions those attacks will end,” Khamenei said in a directive to Iranian military officials.

Both Akraminia and Khamenei also warned that Iran would significantly expand its retaliation in the face of renewed US and Israeli attacks.

“Should a new military adventure be launched, US facilities, equipment, personnel, and interests could be targeted wherever they are within reach,” Akraminia said. Khamenei told Iranian military commanders that any “level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response,” according to his Telegram channel. The Iranian leader also ordered the “comprehensive updating of the military target database to ensure that all kinds of physical and non-physical assets of the US-Zionist enemy are brought within the reach of the Armed Forces.”

About this analysis

Antiwar.com reports warnings from an Iranian army spokesman and from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei that Iran, not Trump, would decide how long any renewed US bombing campaign lasts, and that Iran would widen its response. The statements are attributed throughout, and the US and Israeli attacks are named as such. Nothing in the article misleads its reader.

What it gets right

  • “if the US restarts the bombing campaign against the Islamic Republic”

The article names the US as the party that carried out the earlier bombing, in the active voice, rather than writing the war as something that simply happened.

  • “renewed US and Israeli attacks”

The article names both attackers plainly in its own voice and does not recast earlier strikes as retaliation.

  • “according to Iranian media”

The article marks the spokesman's words as reported by Iranian media, so the reader knows where the quote comes from.
