Rubio urged Aoun to hold accountable those who ordered, financed and directed the shipment, and "underscored that returning explosives to (Hezbollah) should be out of the question," the US official said. A Hezbollah lawmaker said earlier the explosives seized last week by Lebanese security forces belonged to his group.

The lawmaker, Hassan Fadlallah, said Hezbollah had intended to use the explosives against Israel, whose troops are occupying swathes of Lebanese territory seized in this year's war. A Hezbollah official and a Lebanese security source told Reuters the explosives seized in a car last week were intended to be used in explosive drones targeting Israeli troops. Aoun told Rubio the Lebanese army and security forces were fully carrying out decisions ‌to prevent armed displays, confiscate weapons and combat smuggling, the presidency said, adding Aoun asked Rubio to pressure Israel to halt attacks on southern Lebanese towns and villages.

What we found (1)

Reuters reports Rubio's call with Lebanon's president Aoun about explosives seized from Hezbollah. It attributes the US position and Hezbollah's account, and in its own voice names Israel as the occupier and the party striking Lebanon. One background line, in the outlet's own voice, gives Hezbollah a motive of backing Tehran and makes it the sole cause of Lebanon's entry into the war. That is a minor slant.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“pulling Lebanon into the broader US-Israeli war on Iran”

    Why this matters
The words "pulling Lebanon into" make Hezbollah's rockets the cause of everything Lebanon then suffered, in Reuters' own voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that Lebanon's devastation follows from Hezbollah's choice, and that Israel's invasion and bombardment were a consequence it did not choose.
    The context
Israel invaded southern Lebanon and bombarded Beirut and other areas, and the article itself says Israel's troops occupy Lebanese territory and Israel keeps striking the south. Responsibility for those acts sits with Israel.

    “back up Tehran”

    Why this matters
Reuters states as fact, without attribution, that Hezbollah's motive was to back up Tehran.
    The impression it gives
A reader sees Hezbollah chiefly as an arm of Iran acting for a foreign state, not as a Lebanese party.
    The context
The article cites no source for this motive. Elsewhere it quotes Hezbollah's lawmaker saying the group's target is Israeli troops occupying Lebanese land.

What it gets right

  • “whose troops are occupying swathes of Lebanese territory”

Reuters states Israel's occupation of Lebanese land plainly, in its own voice.

  • “Israeli attacks on Lebanon during the war have killed thousands”

The article names Israel as the actor in the killing, not a passive toll.

  • “Aoun asked Rubio to pressure Israel to halt attacks on southern Lebanese towns and villages”

It gives the Lebanese president's account of ongoing Israeli attacks on civilian towns, not only the US demand.
