UN commission says Israel has continued to commit genocide in Gaza since truce

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.2 findings

A United Nations commission says Israel continued to commit genocide in Gaza after last October's U.S.-brokered ceasefire in the enclave, in a report published Monday that Israel dismissed as part of a "misinformation campaign."

The report by the UNIndependent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian ‌Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel examined violations against Palestinian children since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, up to September this year.

It said Israeli authorities had kept committing "genocidal acts with the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in Gaza."

The commission also accused Israeli soldiers and prison guards of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the West Bank, including extermination, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence and persecution against civilians.

The commission said that it had recently documented six cases in which Israeli guards were sexually violent toward male detainees from Gaza in the Sde Teiman military prison.

Another report by the commission in Septemberlast year found that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza and that top Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu incited these acts — accusations that Israel called scandalous.

The Israeli mission in Geneva said the ‌latest report was part of a misinformation campaign to demonize Israel.

“The attempt to destroy the Jewish state ... continues today through efforts by actors such as the UN Commission of Inquiry to undermine Israel’s legitimacy and deny its fundamental right to exist and defend itself," Ambassador Daniel Meron said in a statement.

Life is brutal inside Gaza, one year into the ceasefire

The commission found that Israeli forces continued using heavy munitions, drones, quadcopters, artillery and sniper fire in densely populated areas during the ceasefire ‌in Gaza.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article reports that genocide continued during the ceasefire and lists the weapons used. It never gives the report's own count of the dead since the truce: 1,431 people killed, including at least 300 children and 130 women. Without it, a reader of a story about killing during a truce does not learn that anyone was killed in that period.

How we know

It said the "Yellow Line" which was presented as a temporary ceasefire demarcation, was encroaching increasingly into Gaza, and becoming a de facto border, which the report said reflected Israel’s expanding territorial control of Gaza.

In its report to the UN Security Council, the commission said the situation in the West Bank had also deteriorated sharply, with the number of Palestinians killed in airstrikes increasing from six between 2008 and Oct. 6, 2023, to 254 between Oct. 7, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2026.

Commission Chair Srinivasan Muralidhar said the intentional killing of Palestinian civilians and destruction of homes in the West Bank formed part of a broader strategy to exterminate and displace Palestinians.

Military operations since January 2025 have led to the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967, with 34,176 Palestinians remaining displaced as of August 2026, the report said.

The commission also faulted the Palestinian Authority, saying it had targeted Palestinians who voice dissenting views and that journalists and human rights defenders had been ‌killed and injured.

What we found (2)

CBC reports the UN Commission of Inquiry's finding that Israel kept committing genocide in Gaza after the ceasefire, attributes it clearly and names Israeli forces as the actor. It puts a source in front of the Palestinian toll but states the Israeli toll in its own voice. It also leaves out the report's count of more than 1,400 people killed since the truce.

“Palestinian authorities saymore than 74,000 people have been killedin Israel's assault on Gaza, launched after Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people”

    Why this matters
CBC puts "Palestinian authorities say" in front of the Palestinian toll. In the same sentence it states the Israeli toll of "about 1,200 people" in its own voice with no source.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the Israeli figure as settled and the Palestinian figure as one party's claim.
    The context
Both figures come from the authorities of each side. Only the Palestinian one carries a source. The Gaza Ministry of Health count is the floor used by credible researchers.

    How we know

    • On the recordGaza's Ministry of Health recorded the Israeli occupation as having killed 74,392 Palestinians, a cumulative toll that NewsCord's reading of BBC coverage cites as of October 2026.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

What it gets right

  • “found that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza”

It writes the Commission's 2025 genocide finding as a finding, not as an allegation.

  • “Israeli forces continued using heavy munitions, drones, quadcopters, artillery and sniper fire in densely populated areas”

It names Israeli forces as the actor and says what weapons they used on populated areas.

  • “six cases in which Israeli guards were sexually violent toward male detainees from Gaza in the Sde Teiman military prison”

It names the perpetrators, the victims and the place of the documented abuse.
