, with the approval of the IDF and led by the South Hebron Regional Council and Minister Bezalel Smotrich. This comes after a terror attack at Yehuda Junction outside Hebron in which IDF soldiers Sergeant Major Ron Yonatan Roitman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Soilem were killed. As part of the decision, six farms have been established, and two more settlements are expected to be established.

The two, approximately 27 years old and from Hebron, were apparently on their way to carry out a major attack. They were traveling in a vehicle with a yellow license plate and encountered a routine military checkpoint manned by IDF soldiers. During the exchange of fire, which lasted about 20 minutes, soldiers were wounded until the command post from the 101st Battalion and the Home Front Command flanked and eliminated the terrorists. A large amount of ammunition was found in the back seat of the vehicle, with one of the terrorists holding a long rifle and another a pistol.

Simultaneously, the IDF is also examining the possibility that this was an attack directed from outside and notes that there was no specific warning regarding the brothers or the attack.

i24News reports the start of eight new settlement outposts in the occupied South Hebron Hills without ever saying the land is occupied or that settlements are illegal under international law. It writes the two Palestinian attackers' deaths as "eliminated" while the soldiers are "killed". It shrinks its own earlier report of IOF forcing about 1,500 Palestinians from their Hebron homes into a closure with no named actor.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Severe

“Eight new outposts have begun to be established in the South Hebron Hills area”

    Why this matters
i24News reports eight new outposts being set up in the South Hebron Hills as a plain planning step, "with the approval of the IDF", and never says where they stand in law.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes these outposts are lawful local development approved by the proper authorities.
    The context
The International Court of Justice found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful and its settlements illegal under international law. The article turns entirely on new settlement building and never says the area is occupied or that the outposts are illegal.

“New settlement outposts have been established in Hebron Hills”

    Why this matters
The headline announces new settlement outposts as a neutral fact, with no word on their legal status or on the occupation.
    The impression it gives
A reader scanning the headline takes the outposts as ordinary new communities.
    The context
Settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law, as the ICJ found in July 2024.

    Written straight

Eight new outposts, illegal under international law, have begun to be built in the occupied South Hebron Hills with IOF approval, led by the regional council and Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

  2. Writes the death out

    Serious

    “were eliminated”

    Why this matters
i24News writes that the two Palestinian attackers "were eliminated", a military word that hides that they were shot dead.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the two deaths as the removal of a threat rather than two people being killed.
    The context
The outlet's own live blog said plainly that soldiers killed them. The same article uses "killed" for the two soldiers, so the softer word falls only on the Palestinian dead.

    Written straight

Soldiers from the "Ari" battalion shot dead the two attackers.

  3. Drops what it reported before

    Minor

“A closure was imposed on several villages in the area.”

    Why this matters
i24News reduces the aftermath for Palestinians to a closure on "several villages", in a passive sentence that names no one who imposed it.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Palestinians faced a short movement restriction in a few villages.
    The context
A day earlier i24News reported that IOF were forcing residents of western Hebron neighbourhoods out of their homes, with about 1,500 Palestinians from 250 families forced to flee and a third of the city affected.

  4. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Regarding the decision, Minister Smotrich said”

    Why this matters
i24News gives Minister Smotrich the only quotation in the article, including his boast of "mass demolition of illegal construction", and quotes no Palestinian.
    The impression it gives
A reader hears only the settlement side of a story about building on land in the South Hebron Hills.
    The context
Palestinians in the area, whose land and homes the outposts and demolitions affect, are not heard at all.

    How we know

    • On the recordReporting on Israel's assault on Gaza and on the Greens' Zionism motion has given Israeli, pro-Israel and Israeli-government sources far more space than Palestinian voices, who are quoted least when the story concerns them.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)
