Trump says US needs to take care of ‘one or two sites’ in Iran; talks ‘going fine’ but Tehran ‘not very reliable’

US President Donald Trump says negotiations with Iran are “going fine” but that the Islamic Republic was “not very reliable,” in comments to reporters in Palm Beach.

“We still have to take care of, I would say, one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes,” he says. “You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that”

Pickaxe Mountain has been flagged by Western intelligence as a site likely used to store nuclear material, and has not been struck yet by the US in the war.

The entry never mentions the report, carried a day earlier, that the Trump administration had briefed Gulf allies to prepare for a short, intense round of strikes on Iran as soon as 4 November, the day after the midterms. It also omits the reported direct US talks with Iran in Doha. Without this a reader takes 'take care of' one or two sites and talks 'going fine' as loose talk on a diplomatic track. The reader does not learn that his administration was reported to be preparing allies for imminent US strikes.

The Times of Israel reports Donald Trump's remarks that talks with Iran are 'going fine', that Tehran is 'not very reliable' and that the US still has to 'take care of' one or two sites, naming Pickaxe Mountain. The entry attributes Trump's words and the intelligence claim about the site properly. It does not tell the reader that, a day earlier, his administration was reported to have briefed Gulf allies on a round of strikes as soon as 4 November, which would have given his words their context.

What it gets right

  • “has been flagged by Western intelligence as a site likely used to store nuclear material”

The outlet attributes the claim about the site to Western intelligence and keeps it as a likelihood. It does not state in its own voice that the site holds nuclear material.

  • “Trump says US needs to take care of 'one or two sites' in Iran”

The headline keeps the attribution to Trump and quotes words he actually said in the body.
