Friday morning . Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service said two were seriously wounded and two were lightly wounded. IDF troops rushed to the scene and following a brief pursuit as they attempted to flee. Roadblocks were set up in the area.

The article reports four wounded and no deaths among those attacked. Coverage of the same event names two soldiers, Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem, killed in the attack. Without it a reader believes no one was killed by the gunmen.

How we know

A medical professional well known in the area recorded the shooting and was heard shouting: "The terrorist keeps firing. There are ongoing exchanges of fire between the terrorist and our forces. We can't evacuate the wounded! There's been active gunfire for more than 20 minutes!"

Soldiers at the scene during the attack opened fire on the terrorists, who fled but were later killed nearby. Israeli forces imposed a cordon around several villages in the area. Magen David Adom medics and paramedics were providing medical treatment to the wounded at the scene.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

Ynet reports only a cordon around "several villages". Same-day coverage says the army closed Hebron itself and nearby Palestinian towns and measured the gunmen's family homes for demolition. A reader is left with a smaller picture of what was imposed on Palestinians who were not involved.

How we know

The IDF raised its alert level twice over the past month: first around Oct. 7 and again last weekend amid concerns about an escalation ahead of the elections.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that, based on intelligence in Israel's possession, hostile groups intended to attack Israel and carry out terrorist attacks "on the eve of the elections or during them — to influence the results."

He sharply criticized his opponents in the opposition's anti-Netanyahu bloc, who have accused him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of ulterior motives and of conducting a fear campaign aimed at inflaming tensions ahead of Tuesday's elections.

"Any attack on Israel and any future terrorist attacks, should they unfortunately occur, will be blamed on Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett, Yair Golan and their opposition colleagues, who never stop attacking the prime minister and me and questioning our judgment in issuing warnings and alerts," Katz said.

Katz's statement came after opposition leader Yair Lapid addressed reports Thursday of a possible resumption of fighting with Iran. Speaking to Kan public radio, Lapid said: "Based on the information I have, there is no reason to attack there or anywhere else before the elections. These are attempts to inflame tensions, and it won't help him (Netanyahu) in the elections either, so I don't understand why he's doing it."

Ynet's headline writes the killing of the two attackers as "eliminated", and the outlet labels them "terrorists" in its own voice with no attribution. It reports "four people" wounded without saying the gunmen fired on soldiers at a checkpoint, and it never says two soldiers died, as the same day's coverage reports. It places the attack near Hebron without ever saying it happened in the occupied West Bank.

  1. Writes the death out

    Serious

    “terrorists eliminated after pursuit”

    Why this matters
The headline uses "eliminated" for the shooting dead of two men by soldiers.
    The impression it gives
A headline reader takes in a threat removed, not two people shot dead by Israeli troops.
    The context
The body says soldiers "killed the two terrorists" and that they "were later killed nearby". The headline replaces that plain fact with an army word.

“Four people were wounded in a shooting attack”

    Why this matters
Ynet writes "four people" and never says who was shot at or where.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the wounded as passers-by or civilians caught in an attack on a road.
    The context
Other coverage of the same event says the two men fired on four soldiers stationed at the junction, a military checkpoint at an exit from Hebron.

  4. Labels people on one side's word

    Minor

    “killed the two terrorists”

    Why this matters
In its own voice Ynet calls the two men it reports killed "terrorists", with no attribution to anyone.
    The impression it gives
The reader takes the label as the outlet's established finding about who the dead were.
    The context
The label is the army's: the military statement quoted in other coverage uses it. The Times of Israel, reporting the same event, calls them "gunmen" who fired on a checkpoint. Ynet could have said what they did and attributed the label.

  5. Never names the occupation

    Minor

“near Yehuda Junction, southeast of Hebron”

    Why this matters
Ynet places the attack only by a junction name and "southeast of Hebron". The words West Bank and occupied appear nowhere.
    The impression it gives
A reader with no background may not know the junction, the checkpoint and the cordoned villages are in occupied Palestinian territory.
    The context
Hebron is in the occupied West Bank, which the Times of Israel names in its own report. The ICJ has found the occupation unlawful.
