Moshe Botavia, , took part in the gunbattle during Friday morning's shooting attack at the Yehuda Junction near Hebron, in which five people were wounded, two of them critically.

"We received a report of a shooting attack targeting a military force on Route 35, with casualties. Security forces from the area rushed to the scene, including me," he told ynet. "The terrorists arrived in a vehicle, stopped at a point where they could not be seen, quickly got out and opened fire."

Watch footage from his helmet camera:

"In the morning, residents are traveling along the road, including buses taking students to schools in Kiryat Arba. I arrived at the scene about 15 minutes after the incident began. When I got there, I joined the fighting. Two terrorists were firing from higher ground, and we exchanged fire for about 20 minutes until a force commanded by the deputy battalion commander responsible for the area killed the terrorists.

Describing the scene, Botavia said, "The terrorists arrived in a 'mashtuba' (an illegally operated, deregistered) vehicle with a yellow Israeli license plate. The soldiers at the scene prevented the attack from spreading to the main road and endangering passersby. That prevented a much greater disaster."

He praised the security forces, saying, "The army works hard every night, carrying out numerous operations to maintain residents' security and protect roads and communities. We must remain vigilant."

Since Friday morning, troops from the IDF's Duvdevan undercover unit, Paratroopers Brigade and Search and Rescue Brigade, along with Border Police forces in the West Bank, have been conducting . The forces are also preparing to expand their operations.

So far, , dozens of roadblocks have been set up across the area and the IDF's elite Maglan unit has been deployed to the Judea Regional Brigade . In addition, at the site of the attack.

Police said a situation assessment had been completed under the leadership of Judea and Samaria District Commander Maj. Gen. Moshe Pinchi. Pinchi assigned the investigation to the district's Central Investigations Unit minority affairs division, which will also assist the Shin Bet security agency in investigating the attack.

He also ordered investigators to focus on the use of a "mashtuba" vehicle, an Arabic term referring to a vehicle that has been taken off the road, for example because it was stolen or had become too old for legal use, but continues to be driven illegally.

The attackers used such a vehicle, which had been taken off the road but bore an Israeli license plate.

"This is a phenomenon that must be eradicated," Pinchi said.

District police forces will step up enforcement on roads, including inspections of vehicles and suspects and the seizure of "mashtuba" vehicles.

Ynet calls the two men killed terrorists in its own headline, a label the body rests only on the Kiryat Arba security chief it quotes. It describes Israeli occupation forces' raids and the lockdown of Hebron and Halhul as counterterrorism in its own voice. Every voice is an Israeli official, no resident under lockdown is heard, and Kiryat Arba is never called a settlement.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Serious

    “battling terrorists”

    Why this matters
The headline calls the two men killed "terrorists" in Ynet's own voice, with no attribution.
    The impression it gives
The reader takes it as an established fact, checked by the outlet, that the men were terrorists.
    The context
The body gives the label only through Botavia, the security chief of Kiryat Arba, and the army. The attack it describes targeted "a military force". The men are never named, and Ynet gives no independent basis for the label.

  2. Uses the occupation's words

    Serious

“offensive counterterrorism operations in Hebron and surrounding villages”

    Why this matters
In its own voice, Ynet calls the raids by occupation units into Hebron and its villages "counterterrorism operations", the army's own term.
    The impression it gives
The reader comes away believing the forces are targeting terrorists, not raiding Palestinian towns and villages.
    The context
These are raids by Israeli occupation forces into an occupied Palestinian city and its villages. The article never uses the word raid and never says the West Bank is occupied.

    How we know

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “raid” and “occupied”.

“to reinforce counterterrorism and defensive operations”

    Why this matters
Ynet repeats the army's label, this time for deploying an elite unit across an area under lockdown, and adds "defensive".
    The impression it gives
The reader believes sealing off Hebron and Halhul and setting up dozens of roadblocks is defensive.
    The context
The same sentence reports a full lockdown on two Palestinian cities and dozens of roadblocks. These are measures imposed on a whole occupied population, which the article describes only in the army's terms.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“preparing to expand their operations”

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Since Friday, Israeli occupation forces have been raiding Hebron and surrounding villages, have imposed a full lockdown on Hebron and Halhul and have set up dozens of roadblocks.

  3. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“work has begun to clear and demolish all illegal infrastructure”

    Why this matters
Ynet calls whatever is being demolished "illegal infrastructure" in its own voice. The words "work has begun" take out who is demolishing it and whose property it is.
    The impression it gives
The reader comes away believing this is routine clearing of unlawful structures.
    The context
The article does not say what the structures are, who owns them or who is demolishing them. It never mentions Palestinians or permits at all.

    How we know

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “Palestinian” and “permit”.

  4. Settlement not named as one

    Minor

“the security chief of Kiryat Arba”

    Why this matters
Ynet introduces Kiryat Arba as an ordinary town and its security chief as a neutral witness.
    The impression it gives
The reader does not learn that Kiryat Arba is a settlement or that the main voice in the article speaks for one.
    The context
Kiryat Arba is a settlement in the occupied West Bank, and the ICJ has found the settlements illegal. The article never uses the word settlement.

    How we know

    • On the recordThe International Court of Justice's July 2024 advisory opinion found Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal under international law.icj-cij.org (opens in a new tab)
    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “settlement”.

  5. One side gets the space

    Minor

“a full lockdown has been imposed on the cities of Hebron and Halhul”

    Why this matters
Ynet reports the lockdown of two Palestinian cities in one passive clause. Every voice in the article is an Israeli security official.
    The impression it gives
The reader sees the lockdown only as a security step and hears nothing from the people living under it.
    The context
The article quotes a settlement security chief and a police commander at length. It quotes no resident of Hebron or Halhul and never uses the word Palestinian.

    How we know

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “Palestinian”.
    • On the recordReporting on Israel's assault on Gaza and on the Greens' Zionism motion has given Israeli, pro-Israel and Israeli-government sources far more space than Palestinian voices, who are quoted least when the story concerns them.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)
