Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture
Sky reports that Israel opened a police investigation but leaves out what Reuters reported on the same event: prosecutions of settlers accused of violent crimes against Palestinians are rare. Without it, a reader may take the investigation as a likely route to accountability.
Sky News opens by saying settlers "allegedly" attacked civilians, diplomats and a French mayor. With that word, Sky News casts doubt on an attack that witnesses described, video showed and Israel's own foreign minister condemned. In its own voice, Sky News never calls the West Bank occupied or the settlements illegal. It mentions the occupation only inside a quote from Belgium's minister. Elsewhere, Sky News attributes claims to their sources and quotes statements from those involved.
Casts doubt on a confirmed attack
Serious
“Israeli settlers have allegedly attacked”
Why this matters
The word "allegedly", in Sky's own voice, turns the attack into an unproven accusation in the opening line.
The impression it gives
A reader believes it is still in doubt whether settlers attacked anyone, as if it were only one party's claim.
The context
The attack is not disputed. Israel's foreign minister condemned it, called the attackers rioters and confirmed a police investigation. Reuters and AFP report as fact that settlers attacked the convoy and beat the mayor, and AFP saw video of him slumped on the ground.
How we know
Elsewhere in the article“confirmed that a police investigation has been opened”
Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian civilians, European diplomats and a French mayor in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, Belgium's foreign minister said. Israel's foreign minister condemned the attackers as rioters and police opened an investigation.
Hedges the documented record
Minor
“in the West Bank, sparking international condemnation”
Why this matters
Sky writes "the West Bank" in its own voice, here and in the headline, and never says it is occupied or that the settlements the attackers come from are illegal.
The impression it gives
A reader takes the place as ordinary territory and the settlers as residents. The occupation appears only as a Belgian minister's description.
The context
The ICJ has found the occupation unlawful and the settlements illegal. Reuters' report of the same attack says "the occupied West Bank" in its own voice.
