What we found (1)

Sky News reports the row over the British consulate's closure accurately, attributes each side's claims, and calls the settlements illegal in its own voice. Sky never says in its own voice that East Jerusalem is occupied. The status appears only as the UK government's 'long-standing view', although the International Court of Justice has ruled the occupation unlawful.

“retain its presence in East Jerusalem”

    Why this matters
Sky names East Jerusalem in its own voice with no word that it is occupied. The only place the article calls it occupied is inside Miliband's quote, as the UK's 'long-standing view'.
    The impression it gives
That East Jerusalem's occupied status is a position the British government holds, one view in a diplomatic row, not a settled legal fact.
    The context
The International Court of Justice ruled in July 2024 that Israel's occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem is unlawful. The Guardian, reporting the same event, states that the UN and most of its members recognise East Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian territory.

    “British consulate in Jerusalem”

    Why this matters
The headline drops 'East' and places the consulate simply 'in Jerusalem'. This hides that the row concerns a mission in occupied territory.
    The impression it gives
That Israel is acting over a British office in a city it lawfully governs.
    The context
The consulate is in occupied East Jerusalem, as the body itself reports through Miliband, and the ICJ has ruled that occupation unlawful.
