About this analysis

Sky News reports that Israel ordered the British consulate in East Jerusalem closed and that the UK renamed it the 'UK Mission, Jerusalem' and kept it open. The article attributes each side's account to the person who gave it, calls the settlements illegal in its own voice, and quotes the UK's position that East Jerusalem is occupied. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “followed the UK's ban on trade with illegal West Bank settlements”

Sky News calls the settlements illegal in its own voice. It does not leave their legal status as one government's opinion, which matches the ICJ's finding (R2).

  • “which involves a ban on imports from illegal settlements in the West Bank and sanctions on individuals and firms providing services to settlers”

When it reports that Israel and the US criticised the UK, the outlet again calls the settlements illegal. It also says exactly what the measures are, so the criticism is not left to stand as the reader's only picture.
