Tap a highlight to see why it matters.6 findings

Approximately 220,000 dunams of land have been harvested , according to figures released by the IDF, which detailed the security measures being implemented to protect harvesting operations and prevent violence. According to military estimates, the harvest has yielded approximately 22,500 tons of olives, producing an estimated 5,500 liters of olive oil, with a total reported value of NIS 225 million.

The IDF stated that approximately 100 olive harvesting sites have operated in coordination with security forces, which have provided protection for agricultural activities throughout Judea and Samaria. According to the IDF, the overwhelming majority of coordinated harvesting activities have proceeded according to plan, without exceptional incidents.

To ensure the harvest can proceed safely and minimize the risk of violence, friction, and terrorist activity, the IDF has reinforced Central Command with additional personnel and units. The reinforcements include the headquarters of the 98th Division, a task force headquarters from the Paratroopers Brigade, a regular battalion, and Border Police companies. The additional forces have been deployed across Judea and Samaria to provide security, prevent confrontations, and conduct counterterrorism operations.

The IDF stressed that security personnel regard violence, criminal offenses, and attempts to undermine security as serious matters, regardless of who is responsible. The military added that its forces will continue operating throughout Judea and Samaria to prevent terrorist attacks, safeguard civilians, and preserve security and stability. The announcement follows .

The Binyamin Regional Council of exploiting the olive harvest to provoke confrontations with Jewish residents. That same day, Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was injured during a confrontation near Abu Falah.

The following day, diplomatic representatives from France, Belgium, and Poland reported being attacked by masked Israelis while visiting an olive harvest near Taybeh. The IDF condemned the violence, while police opened an investigation. On October 21, New York congressional candidate Brad Lander and dozens of activists were detained during an olive harvest near Beitar Illit.

The IDF explained that the activity had not received the required advance authorization, which is intended to ensure security and maintain public order. On the same day, Israeli authorities ordered the deportation of two foreign activists detained during an in the Hebron Hills. Earlier, during a visit to Central Command on October 14, IDF Chief of Staff LTG Eyal Zamir addressed the security situation surrounding the harvest, stating: "We are currently in the olive harvest season.

The IDF will continue operating to enable the harvest to take place while maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all populations in the area."

Arutz Sheva relays an army account of the olive harvest, using Judea and Samaria in its own voice and never saying the West Bank is occupied. It calls Palestinians rioters in its own voice on an unattributed report, lets the army's point about the diplomats' uncoordinated visit close that account, and quotes no Palestinian voice.

  1. Uses the occupation's words

    Serious

    “Judea and Samaria”

    Why this matters
The headline names the territory with the Israeli state's biblical term, Judea and Samaria.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the harvest as happening inside Israel, on land with no disputed legal status.
    The context
The ICJ has found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. The article never uses the words occupied or West Bank.

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “occupied” and “West Bank”.

“during the current olive harvest season in Judea and Samaria”

    Why this matters
The opening sentence sets the whole report in Judea and Samaria, in the outlet's own voice and not as an army quotation.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the army's role in the harvest as ordinary policing of Israeli land.
    The context
The harvest takes place under a military occupation the ICJ ruled unlawful. That is why Palestinian farmers need army coordination to reach their trees, and the article never says so.

“several violent incidents and confrontations during this year's olive harvest season in Judea and Samaria”

    Why this matters
The outlet places the violence it goes on to list in Judea and Samaria, again in its own voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the incidents as disorder within Israel's own territory, with the army as a neutral keeper of order.
    The context
The incidents happen in occupied territory where the settlements are illegal under international law, as the ICJ found.

    Written straight

Approximately 220,000 dunams have been harvested during the current olive season in the occupied West Bank, according to figures released by the Israeli army.

  2. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

    “Palestinian Arab rioters”

    Why this matters
The outlet calls the Palestinians rioters in its own voice. Its only hedge is 'reportedly', and its only source is the settlers' regional council named in the next sentence.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that the Palestinians at al-Mughayyir and Abu Falah were rioters who started the violence.
    The context
The only source the article gives is the Binyamin Regional Council, a party to the dispute. No Palestinian account of the day appears anywhere.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The Binyamin Regional Council accused the rioters”

    Show it in the article

    “accused the rioters”

    Why this matters
Even while reporting an accusation, the outlet keeps the word rioters as its own description of the people accused.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the council's charge that the harvest was exploited to provoke confrontations as describing people already shown to be rioters.
    The context
The label rests on the same unverified account the article qualifies as 'reportedly' one sentence earlier.

  3. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“Security forces are working together to maintain public order and protect the area.”

    Why this matters
The outlet states as its own fact the army's claim that its forces are protecting the area and keeping order.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the army as a neutral protector of everyone at the harvest.
    The context
The article itself reports diplomats attacked by masked Israelis during a harvest visit. The record shows settlers in the West Bank operate armed by the Israeli state and accompanied by the army.

  4. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Minor

“The military also noted that the diplomats' visit had not been coordinated with security forces.”

    Why this matters
The outlet closes the account of the attack on French, Belgian and Polish diplomats with the army's point that their visit was uncoordinated.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the victims' failure to coordinate as part of the explanation for the attack.
    The context
Nothing in the article links coordination to the attack. The attackers, the masked Israelis, are never identified or questioned further.

    • Elsewhere in the article“reported being attacked by masked Israelis”

  5. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “unauthorized olive harvest”

    Why this matters
The outlet calls the harvest unauthorized in its own voice, adopting the army's permit regime as the measure of legitimacy.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes picking olives without army permission as a wrongdoing in itself.
    The context
The authorisation is the army's own rule, which the article attributes in the earlier case. The occupation that imposes it was ruled unlawful by the ICJ.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“had not received the required advance authorization”

  6. One side gets the space

    Minor

“The military emphasized that incidents attracting increased media coverage represent only a small proportion of the areas where harvesting is taking place.”

    Why this matters
The outlet lets the army play down the reported incidents, with no reply from anyone who was harvesting or was attacked.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the incidents as marginal and the harvest as largely calm.
    The context
The army, its chief of staff and a settlers' regional council speak throughout. No Palestinian harvester, village or rights group is quoted, though the harvest is theirs.

    How we know

    • On the recordReporting on Israel's assault on Gaza and on the Greens' Zionism motion has given Israeli, pro-Israel and Israeli-government sources far more space than Palestinian voices, who are quoted least when the story concerns them.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)
