Nicola Sturgeon shares bizarre details of 'mad' phone call with Donald Trump

Scotland’s Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has made a shocking claim about her personal relationship with Donald Trump . According to the ex SNP leader, the US President is an “erratic” man who “punishes his friends more than his enemies”. During an appearance as a panelist on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg yesterday (November 1), Sturgeon shared surprising details of a bonkers phone call she had with back in 2016.

"He's destabilised not just the sort of global economy in many respects but the interactions between politicians,” Sturgeon recalled of her encounter. "I think it's very, very difficult for any world leader to know exactly how to deal with him because often he takes loyalty and indications of friendship as signs of weakness, so he ends up punishing his friends much more than he punishes his enemies. "There's just an erraticism, the normal rule book doesn't really apply."

The conversation happened a month after Trump won his first US presidential election and shortly before his official inauguration in January 2017. At the time, the Scottish Government publicly described the call as a "brief introductory conversation" focused on longstanding US-Scotland relations, the National reported. "The conversation was mad in many respects," Sturgeon admitted. "But after the call ended, General Mike Flynn - who at the time was his national security advisor - telephoned my chief of staff to a) ask if the call had happened and b) to get a readout of what was said, because Trump had made this call with no reference to any of his advisors.

That's just a small anecdote that I think illustrates a bigger picture of how completely different it is." Trump and Sturgeon were often at odds, with the Scottish leader condemning his conduct and language as “abhorrent” after he won the US presidency in 2016, as per the National. After Sturgeon stepped down in 2023, Trump laid into her, calling her a “failed woke extremist” and a “crazed leftist” who “symbolises everything wrong with identity politics”.

He also branded her a “terrible” politician. Sturgeon later reportedly fired back in kind, insisting the “feeling was mutual, Donnie”, and saying she was “forever proud to represent all the things that offend your view of the world”. This comes as former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has claimed that Trump may be on the verge of launching a catastrophic nuclear strike against Iran, the Daily Star previously reported . in the immediate aftermath of this week's midterm elections.

What we found (2)

The Daily Star reports Nicola Sturgeon's account on BBC One of a 2016 phone call with Donald Trump and attributes her remarks to her throughout. In its own voice it calls Trump a schoolyard insult and closes on speculation about a nuclear strike on Iran, for which it names only Tucker Carlson. None of this hides a fact the reader needs about the call itself.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “the orange manbaby”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star calls Donald Trump "the orange manbaby" in its own voice, not in a quotation from Sturgeon.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the outlet's mockery as part of the report and reads Sturgeon's account through it.
    The context
Sturgeon's own words, which the article quotes, are that Trump is erratic and that the call was "mad in many respects". The insult is the outlet's, not hers, and it adds nothing to what she said.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The conversation was mad in many respects”

    Show it in the article

  2. Unsourced speculation

    Minor

“Speculation has been mounting for days that Trump could dramatically escalate hostilities”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star states that speculation is mounting without saying who is speculating, after a single claim from Tucker Carlson.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking a strike on Iran is widely expected.
    The context
The only source the article names is Tucker Carlson's claim in its earlier reporting. It gives no other source for the speculation, and the passage has nothing to do with Sturgeon's phone call.

    • Elsewhere in the article“Tucker Carlson has claimed that Trump”

What it gets right

  • “At the time, the Scottish Government publicly described the call as a "brief introductory conversation" focused on longstanding US-Scotland relations, the National reported.”

It sets Sturgeon's present account beside her government's description at the time and names its source, so the reader can weigh the two.

  • “"The conversation was mad in many respects," Sturgeon admitted.”

The word 'mad' in the headline is shown to be Sturgeon's own, quoted and attributed to her.
