after five Israelis wounded in shooting attack

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , immediately following two Palestinian gunmen opening fire Friday on an Israeli military checkpoint, wounding at least five.

Two of the people wounded are in critical condition, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service.

The Israeli military after the attack. Netanyahu said he ordered the IDF to prepare for a full closure of the West Bank starting today, but it’s unclear exactly when such a full closure will begin or how long it will last.

Both gunmen were shot and killed, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement, as forces continued searches across the area for anyone else who may be connected to the attack. It was not immediately clear if any of the victims were soldiers or civilians.

Videos from the scene depict a firefight between the Palestinian gunmen and Israeli forces that lasted at least several minutes with repeated bursts of gunfire ringing out. In one Reuters video, an Israeli responder yells that the shooting has been going on for at least 20 minutes and they were struggling to remove the wounded from the scene.

The attack comes just four days before Israel holds elections for the first time since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, in a crucial test for Netanyahu, who has tried to portray himself as a security hardliner.

The IDF said it located a vehicle used by the gunmen to carry out the attack which was filled with “a large quantity” of ammunition. “This was a serious terror attack,” said IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir following a situation assessment. “The fighters’ rapid action prevented an even more serious attack and further harm to civilians and security forces.” He said the ammunition in the car was intended to be used “to carry out an attack on a much larger scale.”

Zamir said the IDF would also carry out further arrests of suspects and increase intelligence operations in the area.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

CNN describes the Israeli response only as a closure, arrests and searches for anyone connected to the attack. It leaves out two facts reported the same day. Finance Minister Smotrich ordered the demolition of several Palestinian buildings near the scene as a retaliatory move. And during Israeli occupation forces' raids on Hebron and nearby villages, a Palestinian man was shot in Dura. Without them, a reader believes the response was aimed only at people linked to the attack.

How we know

“We will pursue Hamas terrorists and those who sent them, wherever they are and at all times,” said Netanyahu in a statement.

Hamas praised the attack in a statement but did not claim responsibility.

“Together with all the people of Israel, I pray for the full and speedy recovery of those wounded in the attack,” said Netanyahu’s main rival, former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, said in a statement on X.

What we found (3)

CNN reports the Hebron checkpoint shooting and the Israeli response almost entirely through Israeli officials, and no Hebron resident is heard about the siege of their city. Its headline and opening line turn Netanyahu's order to prepare a closure of the West Bank into a closure already ordered. It also leaves out the retaliatory demolitions of Palestinian buildings and the shooting of a Palestinian man in Dura during the raids.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

“Netanyahu orders closure of West Bank”

    Why this matters
The headline says Netanyahu "orders closure of West Bank" as a completed order.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the whole West Bank has been ordered shut.
    The context
CNN's own body says Netanyahu told the army only to prepare for a full closure, and that it is unclear when or whether it starts. The BBC reports the same order as an instruction to prepare.

“ordered the closure of the occupied West Bank”

    Why this matters
The opening sentence repeats the headline's claim that the closure itself was ordered, and ordered immediately.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the closure of the occupied West Bank as an order already in force.
    The context
Three sentences later CNN says it is unclear when a full closure will begin or how long it will last. Only Hebron was placed under siege at once.

“imposed “a full siege” on the city of Hebron”

    Why this matters
CNN reports a full siege on Hebron in one line and moves on. Every voice in the article belongs to Israeli officials, the army or an Israeli emergency service.
    The impression it gives
A reader sees the siege only as a security step after an attack. The people living under it do not appear.
    The context
Hebron is the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, with about 250,000 residents. No resident, Palestinian official or medic is quoted. Meanwhile the army chief, Netanyahu and his rival all get direct quotes.

What it gets right

  • “the occupied West Bank”

CNN names the territory as occupied in its own voice rather than using Netanyahu's "Judea and Samaria".

  • “Hamas praised the attack in a statement but did not claim responsibility”

CNN sets Netanyahu's "Hamas terrorists" claim against the fact that Hamas did not claim the attack, instead of letting his word settle who was behind it.
