Abbas scraps legislative election, sets Nov. 2027 for Palestinians to elect president and legislature

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas formally cancels the legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, and sets presidential and legislative elections for November 11, 2027, according to a statement published by the PA’s official news outlet WAFA.

The statement says restrictions and attacks by Israel in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem undermine “the possibility of holding free, fair and inclusive elections on the previous date while ensuring public safety and the ability of Palestinians to exercise their electoral rights freely and securely.”

Abbas, 90, has not faced an election since 2005, and the PA legislature has been largely defunct since the last legislative election, in 2006, when Abbas’s Fatah lost to Hamas.

Under pressure from international backers, and seeking to gain international legitimacy to govern over Gaza, Abbas earlier this year had committed to holding a legislative election on November 28 and presidential elections at an undetermined date next year.

Sudanese paramilitary group RSF kills 40 people in drone strike near Ethiopia border, monitor says

A drone strike Friday killed at least 40 people, including children, in Sudan along the border with Ethiopia, according to Emergency Lawyers, a group that tracks the war.

It says the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group that has been battling Sudan’s military since 2023, was responsible for Friday’s strike in the Abu Shandi area in Sudan’s Blue Nile province.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said it was appalled by the strike.

The conflict has killed at least 150,000 people, according to conflict monitor ACLED, though aid groups say the real number is likely higher.

Man shot dead in Rahat, police say

Police say a man was fatally shot in the southern Bedouin town of Rahat a short while ago, apparently as part of a criminal “dispute between families.”

He is identified in media reports as Musa al-Jabbour, 26.

Medics rushed the man from the scene and later pronounced him dead, according to police.

Officers are gathering evidence on the scene, police add.

Two Palestinian olive pickers said hospitalized after settlers beat, pepper-sprayed them near Ramallah

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society says it took two farmers to the hospital after settlers attacked them during a harvest in Deir Ibzi, near Ramallah in the central West Bank, amid repeated attacks by settlers during the nascent Palestinian olive harvest season.

Deir Ibzi local council head Mohanned Othman is cited by WAFA, the Palestinian Authority, says the two young men were picking olives on village land when a group of settlers pepper-sprayed and beat them.

Pictures published by Palestinian media show the wounded at the hospital with ointment on their faces and bruises on their backs and arms.

The IDF does not immediately comment.

Lebanese president hails Trump’s decision to revoke 41-year-old restrictions on direct US flights

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun says US President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke flight restrictions between Lebanon and the US that were imposed four decades ago was an indication of Washington’s confidence in steps taken by Beirut to address civil aviation safety.

Direct flights between the US and Lebanon were suspended in 1985 by the Reagan administration following the hijacking of TWA Flight 847.

Trump made the surprise announcement that he would allow US carriers to resume direct flights to Lebanon during a visit by Aoun to Washington in July. While Trump ordered the lifting of the restrictions nearly two weeks ago, the decision was publicly announced only today.

The move comes amid US-brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon on issues including the disarmament of Iran’s Lebanese proxy Hezbollah, which has been weakened after two wars with Israel since the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023.

8-year-old boy seriously wounded in apparent traffic accident in south, medics say

Medics rushed an 8-year-old boy to Beersheba’s Soroka Hospital in serious condition after he was apparently hurt in a traffic accident in southern Israel, the Magen David Adom ambulance service says.

The boy was brought to the medics at Nevatim Junction, Magen David Adom says.

Iran able to replenish its missiles and drones, getting arms from Russia, officials tell Bloomberg

Iran has preserved its missile and drone factories and is able to replenish its supply of the weapons, according to Western officials cited by Bloomberg, with one official saying Russia is providing the Islamic Republic with missiles.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment, Bloomberg says.

The same official said Iran still has some anti-ship weapons and is also well-stocked with ballistic missiles, Bloomberg reports.

The outlet says the officials’ assessment contradicts comments by US President Donald Trump and his staff, including US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said on September 30 that the US had destroyed the Iranians’ “military industrial capacity” and “their entire defense base.”

In a statement quoted by Bloomberg, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly “rejected that assessment,” the outlet says.

“First, President Trump obliterated Iran’s nuclear facilities during Operation Midnight Hammer,” Bloomberg quotes Kelly as saying, in reference to US strikes during the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June 2025.

“Then, Operation Epic Fury successfully destroyed the conventional shield that Iran sought to create over a nuclear program, including their ballistic missiles, production facilities, and navy,” Kelly said, referring to the war launched by Israel and the US against Iran on February 28 this year, according to Bloomberg.

Putin conveyed to Trump Tehran’s position on ending US-Iran war, Kremlin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin has relayed to US President Donald Trump Iran’s position on a possible resolution to the US-Iran war, with the backing of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Kremlin says, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency.

“In coordination with the president of Iran, Putin conveyed to Trump the Iranian side’s view on a possible resolution of the conflict,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying.

The news agency also cites Russia’s defense ministry as saying its forces have captured the settlements of Lukashove and Lobanivka in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Reuters cannot independently verify the battlefield reports.

Anti-Israel group petitions ICC to investigate Israeli health officials for war crimes over Sde Teiman

The anti-Israel Hind Rajab Foundation says it petitioned the International Criminal Court to investigate Israeli doctors, hospital administrators, the Israeli Medical Association and the ministries of health and defense for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide over alleged abuse of Palestinian inmates at the Sde Teiman military detention center.

Individuals identified in the petition include former health ministers Moshe Arbel and Uriel Busso as well as IMA President Zion Hagay, the association’s CEO Leah Wapner and head of its ethics board, Yosef Walfisch, the legal group says.

Sde Teiman, in southern Israel, has repeatedly faced accusations of maltreatment and torture of Gazan inmates held there following the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023, that sparked the Gaza war.

A right-wing mob that included some coalition members stormed the base in 2024 after Military Police arrested several reservists there on suspicion of severe sexual abuse against an inmate.

Nine wounded by Israeli forces and settlers near Ramallah, Palestinian medics say

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reports at least nine people wounded by Israeli settlers and forces during the olive harvest in the Ramallah-area village of Deir Abu Mashal. The IDF does not immediately comment.

The wounded include at least one person who took a live bullet to the leg and others who were beaten or hit by rubber bullets, according to the Red Crescent.

Palestinian media earlier reported that photojournalist Issam Rimawi of Turkish news agency Anadolu was hit in the thigh by a rubber bullet fired by Israeli forces in Deir Abu Mashal while he covered the olive harvest there. The forces also reportedly fired tear gas against Palestinian olive pickers.

Footage published by Palestinian media shows Rimawi on a stretcher being taken into a Red Crescent ambulance vehicle.

Separate footage shows a medic attending to another young man who is bleeding from the head and thigh.
