Times of Israel, on West Bank, 22 October 2026

The Times of Israel names settler extremists as the actors in arson, olive theft and assaults on harvesters, and notes that no arrests followed. But it writes the police justification for detaining the activists into its own voice, saying they entered the area "without coordinating in advance with authorities as required", days after its own reporting that Defence Ministry maps disproved exactly that claim. The police then get the closing word three times over, while no Palestinian whose vehicle was torched or whose olives were stolen is heard, and the article never tells the reader that the West Bank is occupied and the settlements it names illegal under international law.

What we found

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“without coordinating in advance with authorities as required”

    What the words do
The words "as required" put the police's justification for the detentions into the paper's own voice, with no attribution, as a settled fact about the area.
What a reader comes away believing
That the activists broke a genuine, verified legal requirement and the detentions were lawful.
    What is actually the case
The article itself reports that when police and the IOF made the same claim a day earlier, official Defence Ministry maps proved no prior coordination was needed to enter the area. The requirement is the police's assertion, not an established fact.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“official Defense Ministry maps later proved that the area in question did not, in fact, require prior coordination in order to enter”

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Police said officers detained 11 foreign activists and one Palestinian after their group tried to harvest olive trees in the southern West Bank without coordinating with the authorities in advance, which police say was required. A day earlier, Defence Ministry maps disproved a similar police claim about another area.

  2. Hedges the documented record

    Minor

“in the Gush Etzion region of the West Bank”

    What the words do
Names the settlement bloc and the territory in neutral geographic terms, with no word about its legal status.
What a reader comes away believing
That Gush Etzion is an ordinary region of the West Bank where Israelis live lawfully.
    What is actually the case
The ICJ found in July 2024 that Israel's occupation of the West Bank is unlawful and its settlements there illegal under international law. The article never says the West Bank is occupied, nor that the settlements are illegal.

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “occupied” and “international law”.

    Show it in the article

“adjacent to the Givat Ronen outpost”

    What the words do
Places the olive theft next to an outpost named without any legal description, although the article is willing to write "illegal outpost" elsewhere.
What a reader comes away believing
That Givat Ronen is simply a nearby place, its presence on Palestinian land unremarkable.
    What is actually the case
Outposts and settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law per the ICJ's July 2024 opinion, and the article applies the word "illegal" to one outpost only, never to the settlements it names here.

  3. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Police said that during the latest incident, the activists refused to identify themselves or leave the area, leading to their detention.”

    What the words do
Opens a run of three closing sentences built entirely on police statements about the detained activists.
What a reader comes away believing
That the police account of the detentions is the account on offer.
    What is actually the case
No activist, lawyer or representative is quoted in reply anywhere in the article, and no Palestinian from Beit Ummar, Burin or Masafer Yatta whose vehicle was burned or olives were stolen is heard; Palestinians appear only as the owners of property others took.

    How we know

    • On the recordReporting on Israel's assault on Gaza and on the Greens' Zionism motion has given Israeli, pro-Israel and Israeli-government sources far more space than Palestinian voices, who are quoted least when the story concerns them.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

    Show it in the article

“All 11 foreign activists were transferred to the Population Immigration and Border Authority for a hearing on their deportation from Israel, police said.”

    What the words do
Closes the reporting with a further police statement and nothing from those facing deportation.
What a reader comes away believing
That the matter rests where the police put it.
    What is actually the case
The people being deported are not quoted, and the article itself records that police and army claims about an identical incident were disproved by Defence Ministry maps.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“police and the IDF claimed that a similar incident had taken place”

    Show it in the article

  4. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article never states that the West Bank is occupied territory and that the settlements and outposts it names sit there illegally under international law, as the International Court of Justice found in July 2024. Without it a reader can take Givat Ronen, Gush Etzion and Beitar Illit for ordinary Israeli communities whose residents happen to behave badly, rather than settlements built on land Israel holds unlawfully.

Rifle-wielding settler extremists filmed dancing at wedding to anti-Zionist anthem

Israeli television on Thursday aired footage from what it said was a wedding held earlier this week, attended by settler extremists . In the clip broadcast by the Kan public broadcaster, the so-called hilltop youth can be seen dancing to a song that has become something of an anthem for the anti-Zionist Neturei Karta sect of ultra-Orthodox Judaism and includes the phrase, “We do not believe in the rule of the heretics.” While the anthem is regularly heard at certain ultra-Orthodox gatherings in Israel, its performance at the wedding in the West Bank highlighted how extreme some parts of the settler movement have become in rejecting the authority of the state. One of the participants at the wedding is seen waving what appears to be an IDF-supplied automatic weapon in the air, while another wields a pistol. A third participant waves a flag in support of Ariel Dahari, a resident of an illegal outpost who was filmed beating a Palestinian woman with a club last year. They also spray-painted a message in Hebrew that read, “Regards, Dahari and mazal tov.” No arrests were made. Kan also showed footage from other recent hilltop youth weddings in which a settler brandishes a sword while hanging out of a car, and another holds up a rifle atop a horse. Video shows settlers stealing Palestinian olives Separately Thursday, security camera footage captured settlers stealing olives belonging to residents of the northern West Bank Palestinian village of Burin, . As in previous years, the annual olive harvest has seen daily attacks by settlers against Palestinian farmers. Today in Burin, just below the settlement of Givat Ronen. Foreign activists trying to reach the area in order to protect Palestinians from attack were barred from doing so by Israeli forces. On Wednesday, police and the IDF claimed that a similar incident had taken place near the Beitar Illit settlement — and involved Congressional candidate Brad Lander — but official Defense Ministry maps later proved that the area in question did not, in fact, require prior coordination in order to enter.
