Araghchi warns EU
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged the European Union to avoid double standards and appeasement in the face of US bullying during a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly session in New York. Araghchi warned that such approaches undermine international peace and security and stressed Iran’s practical commitment to diplomacy as a means of achieving peace and security in the region.
Araghchi told Kallas that repeated US breaches of commitments had been the sole factor disrupting diplomatic processes, and he said the EU had chosen appeasement on numerous occasions instead of adhering to principles it claims to uphold. Araghchi and Kallas exchanged views on developments including the Ukraine conflict and the situation in West Asia amid the continuation of US acts of aggression and economic warfare against Iran.
EU and NATO face threats
Seyed Abbas Araghchi delivered a stern warning to European and NATO officials regarding their role in supporting military operations against Gaza and Iran, and he criticized NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s remarks on “Operation Epic Fury.” Araghchi said NATO leadership should understand that groveling never satisfies a bully, and he framed the issue as severe long-term consequences of supporting alleged Israeli and U.S. war crimes.
Araghchi also warned that “In meetings with @kajakallas and other EU counterparts, I warned of the severe long-term consequences of facilitating and supporting Israeli-U.S. war crimes, whether in Gaza or Iran.” Araghchi’s warning came as US President Donald Trump said he thinks a settlement will be reached with Iran and noted that some US-Iran communication had taken place even today.
Hormuz talks and navigation
European officials met Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss efforts to end the war and restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he discussed negotiations for the reopening of Hormuz with Araghchi and added that he “encouraged Iran to exercise its influence to promote political and diplomatic solutions that bring peace and stability to the region.”
Kaja Kallas said she discussed with Araghchi “diplomatic prospects for ending the US-Iran war and fully re-opening the Strait of Hormuz,” and she insisted that “There were no tolls or fees for passage before the war, and there should be none after the war.”
The diplomatic focus on Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb followed Tehran’s response to the US and Israel launching a war against Iran on Feb. 28, which Tehran says effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.
