Trump threatens, talks continue
Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly he faces a "big decision" on whether to strike Iran again or pursue a peace deal, and he said he could "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if the conflict went unresolved. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded at the UN General Assembly by saying, "Who has attacked our country calls us terrorists," and he asserted that Iran has been the victim of terrorism.
Trump’s speech came as US and Iranian representatives met on the sidelines of the general assembly, and BBC reported that American officials said the meeting was "very productive". Steve Witkoff later confirmed on X that talks were held "through the mediators, who shuttled between the two sides throughout the day," and he said the mediators would continue their work.
Pezeshkian rejects force
Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN General Assembly, "We will never bow our heads or kneel," and he said Iran would defend itself "to our last breath". Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of bombing Iranian schools and showed images of the deceased leader of the Iranian regime, Ayatollah Khamenei, and photos of the minor victims of the Minab school.
CNN reported that a US delegate walked out only minutes into Pezeshkian’s speech, after Pezeshkian said Iranians have been "the victims of terrorism". Pezeshkian also warned that Iran would not allow some to have free access to Hormuz and then use it to attack Iran in its own waters, saying, "We cannot allow some to have free access to Hormuz and then use it to attack us in our own waters."
Diplomacy conditions and stakes
Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, said negotiations took place through a Qatari mediator and that Tehran’s conditions included an end to the war on all fronts and to US "acts of aggression." Baghaei also said Tehran wanted the US to end its naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman and cease acts of "economic terrorism," and he added that Iran sought releasing Iran’s restricted assets and an agreement on a "safe shipping route" in the Strait of Hormuz.
