A social media clip claimed Paris stores armored façades with self-propelled weapons to deter looting. Protests across France and Germany included looting, clashes, and police using tear gas and water cannons.

Fake clip fuels fears

Student unions in France called for protests to resume after a third wave, while a social media clip claimed luxury French stores in Paris had equipped storefronts with self-propelled deadly weapons in anticipation of looting.

The clip began circulating after an account named (Alina d’Aquitaine) posted it on X on October 31 with the phrase "Protests October 31. Stores are preparing," and the post accumulated over a million views.

Open-source intelligence from the Al Jazeera network verified the clip and found it to be fake, with visual analysis citing inconsistencies in the Sephora brand logo color and a weapon design described as a hybrid between the Browning M2 heavy machine gun and intelligent factory robots.

The original source of the clip traced to a YouTube channel called (Jaranor Films), which relied on AI-generated footage and had posted the clip days earlier as documenting stores in Madrid preparing for upcoming far-left protests, with the platform adding the tag (AI content).

Protests across Europe

Police clashed with demonstrators across France, Germany, Portugal, Albania and elsewhere as shops were looted, tear gas was fired and firebombs were thrown. In Lisbon, police moved into Rossio Square to clear a protest camp after protesters pitched more than 50 tents following their march through the capital, and Portuguese police said there were 13 arrests with six in Lisbon and seven in Porto.

In Germany, rioters looted shops in central Frankfurt late on Saturday, and the BBC said police used water cannon to disperse protesters who were targeting emergency workers with fireworks, stones and bottles. In France, the BBC said more than 320,000 people took part in a third consecutive weekend of largely peaceful protests, while the Guardian described clashes erupting in Paris and Marseille after tens of thousands marched across France in a third wave over the cost of living and deteriorating public services.

Arrests, injuries, next steps

France’s interior ministry told broadcaster BFM TV that there were at least 565 arrests in connection with the protests, while the Guardian said police had arrested 565 people across the country late Saturday. The Guardian reported that four police officers and one gendarme were injured in Paris, and Sky News said five officers were injured in Paris, including three by Molotovs, with one officer suffering "severe burns" when their leg caught fire.

In Germany, the BBC said Roman Poseck, interior minister of Hesse state, said "around 100 clearly identified left-wing extremists" had infiltrated the protest in the city, and he added it was "shameful" how the protests had ended. Student protesters in France vowed to stage new high school and university blockades on Tuesday and Thursday, and Sabrine Kharbach of the Union Étudiante said, "Then we will join the 5 November demonstration called by workers and trade unions."
