Three years, new mobilization
Turkey lit up landmarks and squares with messages of solidarity with Palestine on the third anniversary of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, and the Galata Tower in Istanbul was cloaked in the colors of the Palestinian flag. Ankara saw thousands participate in the “Free Palestine March,” protesting the ongoing Israeli war on the Strip despite the ceasefire reached on October 10, 2025. Participants set off from in front of the Quinceh Mosque after the Isha prayer, in response to a call by civil society organizations under the “Ankara Platform for Solidarity with Palestine,” and the march ended in front of the Malika Khatoon Mosque.
Participants chanted slogans against Israel and the United States, and they called on Islamic countries to overcome their differences and unite around a common will. The participants urged the full implementation of all clauses of the ceasefire, ensuring the entry of humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and heavy machinery needed to remove rubble into Gaza without conditions.

Casualty math and missing
Demographic data issued by the Gaza Health Ministry for the period from October 7, 2023 to September 8, 2026 showed more than 52 percent of the more than 74,000 fatalities were children, women, and the elderly. The first two months of the war were the deadliest, with 10,803 people killed in October 2023 and 9,955 in November 2023. The Health Ministry’s statistics do not include a classification of whether the fatalities were civilians or combatants.
A ceasefire went into effect in Gaza on October 10, 2025, but the death toll continued to rise as the ministry issued near-daily updates and rescue operations retrieved bodies trapped under rubble. Zaher al-Waheedi, head of the Health Information Unit at the Health Ministry, told BBC that there are about 7,400 people missing under the rubble in various parts of Gaza.

Orphans, ceasefire, and aid
The “City of Orphans” at Al Mawasi, where the “only survivor” section shelters children whose entire families have died in 800 tents, was described by RTVE.es. Mahmoud Kalakh, the director of ‘Al Baraka City for the Care of Orphans’ in Jan Yunis Governorate, said the complex is “It is considered the largest concentration of orphans in the world,” and he spoke as RTVE News reported on the camps. Those minors are among 58,000 children who have lost one or both parents in the enclave, according to UNICEF citing data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Israel designated Al Mawasi a “humanitarian work zone,” and the camps occupy 50,000 square meters rented from private owners, according to RTVE.es. RTVE.es added that Kalakh recounted how tents were built as displacement pushed people from the north of Gaza toward the south and from east to west, and he said that “we discovered that among these people there were mothers who came only with their children, without men.”
