Mamdani marks Oct. 7

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned Israel’s war of genocide in Gaza in a post on the X platform on Wednesday, saying the Israeli occupation government has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and committed genocide since October 2023. Mamdani said the day was “profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers” and marked three years since the “horrific war crimes of October 7,” when Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others.

Mamdani argued that “The suffering did not begin nor end that day,” and he said it continued through what he described as “the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza.” Mamdani said even since the “so-called ceasefire,” more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed, and he said the suffering intensified with “every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals” and every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist.

Jewish leaders denounce

Joe Potsanik of the New York Board of Rabbis said Mamdani’s statement was insensitive, at best, and he told reporters, “I wish I could say people were surprised, but they weren't.”

The Anti-Defamation League accused Mamdani of “weaponizing a day meant for mourning,” saying “@NYCMayor, not once do you say 'Jews.'”

Israeli Consulate officials condemned Mamdani’s response, and Amb. Ofir Akunis said, “The mayor's statement is a disgrace, shame, and insult to the memory of those who were murdered on October 7.”

Jack Simony, president and director general of the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation, said Mamdani should have been more sensitive on a day he described as “a trying day for Jews,” adding that “October 7 does not require qualification.”

War, aid, and impunity

Mamdani linked his Gaza accusations to U.S. support, saying New Yorkers know their tax dollars “fund these war crimes” and calling for “striving for a world where everyone lives in freedom and dignity.” Mamdani said the suffering intensified with “every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing,” and he argued that “our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.”

“It’s like turning September 11 into a day of mourning for Al Qaeda terrorists.”

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, accused Mamdani of trying to hijack the anniversary, saying, “It’s like turning September 11 into a day of mourning for Al Qaeda terrorists.” Danon said, “We will remember those who were killed, and we will never forget who was behind this massacre,” as the dispute over Mamdani’s framing of October 7 and Gaza continued into the anniversary day.
