Anthropic’s Custom Chip Team
Anthropic confirmed on August 5, 2026 that it is building an in-house silicon team to design custom chips for Claude as demand for its models surges.

A recently posted job listing seeks engineers with semiconductor design expertise and offers salaries between $320,000 and $485,000, requiring candidates who have “shipped silicon” and can make “consequential calls without a large organization behind them.”
Anthropic also said it will maintain a “multi-chip” approach, continuing to use hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD rather than breaking with existing suppliers immediately.
The plan comes as Anthropic explores manufacturing options, with The Information reported last month that it was scouting Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner for these custom chips.
Co-Design and the Cost
Quartz reported that Anthropic confirmed it will hire engineers to co-design chips and models so Claude can run faster and at greater scale, and it described the job as a “custom silicon team.”
Quartz also cited Reuters-linked industry sources saying the price tag for developing an advanced AI chip can approach half a billion dollars, driven by specialized engineering talent and the high cost of achieving reliable, defect-free fabrication.

Business Insider said the engineer position requires “direct personal contribution” to the finalization and shipping of semiconductor designs, and it quoted the listing’s description of a candidate who has “shipped silicon” and a “realistic relationship with schedules.”
The same Business Insider report said Anthropic will continue a “multi-chip approach” in which hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD remains central to scaling efforts.
In parallel, Business Insider noted that Reuters previously reported Anthropic was exploring designing its own chips, while The Information reported last month that Anthropic held talks with Samsung Electronics as a potential manufacturing partner.
Supply Chain Stakes
Anthropic’s chip push is framed as a way to reduce reliance on Nvidia while still leaning on AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD, with Finimize describing the effort as an attempt to ease supply constraints.

Techzine Global added that, through a long-term agreement with Google and Broadcom, Anthropic will have access to approximately 3.5 gigawatts of custom TPU capacity starting in 2027, and it described this as additional capacity alongside existing suppliers.
Meanwhile, Business Insider said Anthropic’s spokesperson told the outlet the company is building an in-house silicon team to design custom chips for Claude, the first time it has publicly confirmed the plans.
