Six commanders appointed

Iran’s Supreme Leader and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ayatollah Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei appointed six senior commanders to key positions in the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Basij Resistance Force, according to an official press release cited by The Tribune.

In separate decrees, Khamenei named Ali Abdollahi as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and Kioumars Heydari as Deputy Chief of Staff, while Ahmad Vahidi was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC with the rank of lieutenant general and Mostafa Izadi as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC.

The decrees also assigned Ali Azmaei to command the IRGC Navy and named Hossein Taeb as Head of the Basij Resistance Force, placing the six commanders across Iran’s military command structure.

Kashmir Observer described the reshuffle as following the deaths of several senior officers during the recent conflict with the United States and Israel, and said Khamenei appointed Ahmad Vahidi at the helm of the IRGC while Major General Ali Abdollahi took over as chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces.

Kashmir Observer further said the appointments came months after former IRGC chief Major General Mohammad Pakpour and armed forces chief Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi were killed in what Iran says were U.S.-Israeli strikes during the conflict earlier this year.

Decrees, ranks, and gaps

Iran International said Khamenei appointed six senior military commanders on Monday to formalize parts of a wartime leadership structure that had operated for months without decrees, while leaving several sensitive intelligence posts without publicly named permanent chiefs.

It named Ali Abdollahi as chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces and Kioumars Heydari as his deputy, and said Khamenei also formally appointed Ahmad Vahidi as commander-in-chief of the IRGC and promoted him to the rank of major general.

Iran International added that Mostafa Izadi was named deputy commander-in-chief of the IRGC and Rear Admiral Ali Azmaei was formally appointed commander of the IRGC Navy, while Hossein Taeb was named commander of the Basij paramilitary force.

The same report said the decrees settle some of the most consequential vacancies created by US-Israeli strikes since the war began on February 28, and it described Abdollahi as replacing Abdolrahim Mousavi, who was killed alongside Pakpour and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh in strikes on the opening day of the war.

Kashmir Observer, meanwhile, quoted Khamenei’s stated rationale for Vahidi’s promotion, saying the appointment came in view of Pakpour’s “honourable and proud martyrdom” and Iran’s “ongoing confrontation with what he described as ‘global arrogance.’”

Deterrence and readiness

The Tribune said the appointments were made through separate decrees issued by Khamenei announcing the responsibilities and missions of six senior commanders and officials of the armed forces, placing them in senior positions across Iran’s military command structure.

Kashmir Observer reported that Khamenei instructed Vahidi to strengthen Iran’s military capabilities, maintain “maximum deterrence” and ensure readiness for “powerful offensive operations” against adversaries.

It also said Khamenei urged the new IRGC commander to strengthen ideological and cultural foundations within the force while expanding its command and management structures.

Infobae added that Khamenei explained on X that the purpose of the appointments is to “prepare timely, revolutionary, and effective responses to any level and type of conventional or modern threats — whether military, cognitive, or hybrid — against the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Infobae further reported that the reshuffle placed new leadership over Iran’s military and security apparatuses at a time when the war waged almost six months earlier with bombings by the United States and Israel is still underway.
