B’Tselem’s “Erasure Project”
Israeli rights group B’Tselem said Israel is carrying out a “process of erasure” for Palestinians in the West Bank, aiming to cement Israeli presence and sovereignty by undermining Palestinians’ ability to sustain “their presence as a community in their homeland.”

B’Tselem said that since the end of 2022 a new phase has begun in Israeli policy in the West Bank, and it added that “a single political project” permeates “all aspects of life,” according to its executive director Yuli Novak.
The report described erasure as extending beyond killing or displacement to dismantling conditions that allow Palestinians to live on their land, including preventing access to lands and sources of livelihood, restricting movement, weakening social and political institutions, and reducing the ability to plan the future.
B’Tselem also said that from October 7, 2023, to August 31, 2026, Israel killed 1,107 Palestinians in the West Bank, including 245 children, and it said Israel has displaced 75 Palestinian communities while hilltop settlements and settler farms seized 1.07 million dunams, equal to 18% of the West Bank.
In a separate report framing, MNTV said B’Tselem described a coordinated “mechanism of elimination” operating across the West Bank, where about 3.5 million Palestinians live, and it said the system intensified since the formation of Israel’s current government at the end of 2022 and escalated further after October 2023.
Five mechanisms and quotes
B’Tselem said the “process of erasure” in the West Bank is carried out through five main mechanisms: “violence and sowing fear, imposing movement constraints, striking livelihoods and the economy, undermining social and political life, and land confiscation.”
The report described restrictions and violence affecting routine activities ranging from traveling to work and taking children to school to accessing medical care, attending universities, cultivating agricultural land, visiting relatives, and participating in cultural and community life.
In Jerusalem, Euronews reported B’Tselem’s executive director Holly Nofac saying, “These policies, acting together, dismantle the conditions Palestinians need to continue living here as a people.”
Euronews also reported B’Tselem fieldwork head Kareem Jibran saying movement restrictions include military checkpoints and more than 900 gates at entrances to towns and villages, including a gate at the entrance to Sa’ir in 2025.
Euronews further said B’Tselem accused settlers of daily attacks on Palestinians and described the report’s framing of forced displacement of dozens of small, isolated Palestinian communities as “ethnic cleansing.”
Death tolls, displacement, and stakes
The sources diverged on the scale of deaths and displacement, with Al-Jazirah Net citing B’Tselem’s figure that “from October 7, 2023, to August 31, 2026, Israel killed 1,107 Palestinians in the West Bank, including 245 children,” while Euronews cited AFP statistics based on Palestinian Authority data that “1,108 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.”

B’Tselem said it has displaced 75 Palestinian communities and that hilltop settlements and settler farms seized 1.07 million dunams, equal to 18% of the West Bank, and it also said Israel forcibly displaced about 33,000 Palestinians from refugee camps in the north of the West Bank.
Euronews reported that B’Tselem said the Netanyahu government has enshrined and approved 104 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling them illegal under international law, and it said Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 where about three million Palestinians and 500,000 settlers reside.
In its first response to the report, Euronews said the army described any accusation that it seeks to annihilate the Palestinians as a people as “false, baseless, and largely detached from reality,” and it said it “condemns in the strongest terms acts of violence with nationalist motives.”
Euronews also reported B’Tselem’s argument that forthcoming legislative elections in Israel would have limited impact, with Nofac saying, “this government did not create the Erasure Project, but inherited a violent political system built by successive Israeli governments over decades.”
