PAC spending after Michigan loss

Crypto-linked political action committee (PAC) affiliates reported new campaign spending aimed at federal primaries in Florida, Alaska and Wyoming after a primary loss in Michigan on Tuesday.

Cointelegraph said Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress disclosed spending more than $1.5 million on media to support House of Representatives and Senate candidates ahead of Aug. 18 primary elections, citing Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings as of Thursday.

In Alaska’s at-large congressional district, Defend American Jobs reported spending more than $500,000 on media supporting the re-election of Representative Nick Begich, while the same group spent about $500,000 on Republican candidate Sydney Gruters in Florida’s 16th district.

Cointelegraph also tied the Wyoming spending to a contest connected to the state’s upcoming Senate vacancy, with Protect Progress-affiliated activity backing Representative Harriet Hageman, a candidate running for the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat currently held by Cynthia Lummis.

The Michigan defeat followed Protect Progress-supported activity, after Democratic incumbent Shri Thanedar lost a primary to State Representative Donavan McKinney following media spending of more than $2 million.

Voting records become campaign fuel

Cointelegraph said many of the candidates supported in the new filings voted in favor of the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act while serving in Congress, and it described the spending as an attempt to influence U.S. elections through media. The article said Frankel, Begich and Hageman all voted in favor of the GENIUS Act and CLARITY Act while serving in Congress, while it noted that Gruters did not appear to have made any public statements on crypto or blockchain beyond a questionnaire response. Cointelegraph quoted Stand With Crypto’s January framing that its “primary goal” in 2026 was getting crypto market structure legislation through Congress, and it said the group rates candidates based on voting records and public statements.

In parallel, DiarioBitcoin described Fairshake investing more than USD $2 million in the Democratic primary of Detroit, but said the pro-crypto representative Shri Thanedar lost to the progressive Donavan McKinney. DiarioBitcoin also asserted that Thanedar copatrocinó la versión de la Cámara de Representantes de la Ley de Claridad del Mercado de Activos Digitales, and it said he would leave his seat in the next Congress.

What’s at stake for 2026

Cointelegraph said it remained uncertain as of Thursday whether the U.S. Senate would hold a vote on the CLARITY Act before the chamber broke for a month-long recess, but argued that how lawmakers cast ballots could affect whether the crypto industry supports or opposes re-election bids.

It stated that all 435 House seats are up for grabs in 2026, as are 33 seats in the U.S. Senate, and it linked the PAC spending cycle to the broader question of whether crypto market-structure legislation advances.

Cointelegraph reported that Stand With Crypto’s community director Mason Lynaugh told it in November that how lawmakers vote on the bill could impact their re-election chances.

DiarioBitcoin framed the stakes around the Ley de Claridad, saying the sector expects it to be voted on in the Senate this week and that each vote in the Senate is crucial.

DiarioBitcoin also said the outcome of the elections and legislative activity will define the future of the sector in the United States, even as it described the Detroit result as a costly setback for Fairshake.
