Midterms and possible fraud
Europeans will watch the United States midterm elections on November 3 with concern after nearly two years of abuses by the Trump administration. The Democrats are expected to win the House of Representatives and achieve major gains in the Senate, perhaps even gaining control of both chambers. Election officials across the country are preparing for possible fraud claims, ballot or voting-machine confiscations, and the deployment of ICE agents or even soldiers to polling places, even though it is clearly illegal.
The United States, breaking with two decades of tradition, has prohibited the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) from being present as an electoral observer. Courts have already rejected attempts by the government to restrict mail-in voting and to use public funds for electoral propaganda.
Spending and super PACs
The current election cycle is the most expensive on record, according to AdImpact, and North of $16 billion have been raised ahead of Tuesday’s looming elections. Ad spending in House and Senate races topped $4 billion and mega-donors have overwhelmingly backed Republicans with contributions largely flowing from AI, crypto, and online gambling interests. AIPAC and its super PAC, the United Democracy Project, are still spending a ton of money on a lot of races, and more often than not, their candidates are still winning.
Artificial intelligence super PAC networks affiliated with OpenAI or Anthropic dropped a whopping $50.7 million on the primaries and spent $8.5 million in the lead-up to the general election. Maia Hibbett warned, "No matter which party gets control of either or both houses of Congress, there will be a lot of people elected next week who got there on the backs of Big Tech and special interests."
Power, oversight, and foreign policy
A Democratic-controlled Congress would play a stronger role in the legislative process and in budgeting, and would oversee the Administration rigorously, from the fundamentals of its policies to unbridled corruption. Oversight committees may have to issue subpoenas to compel officials to testify and may also have to ask third parties, including companies and foreign governments, to make private agreements public. Democrats seek to correct the course in foreign policy, but Congress will face structural limitations, and consequently Trump may press even more to implement his international agenda.
Iran is likely to be the top priority for the new members of Congress, given its deep unpopularity, and the current Congress has repeatedly approved measures to limit Trump’s room for maneuver. In the area of tariffs, Congress has ceded substantial authority to the President in recent years, and Democrats and even some Republicans may vote to roll back the most egregious measures.
