DNC Releases 2024 Election Autopsy, Ken Martin Apologizes for Bigger Distraction

The Democratic National Committee released its long-awaited internal “autopsy” into the results of the 2024 presidential election on Thursday, with DNC chair Ken Martin apologizing for “creating an even bigger distraction” after months of pressure to publish the report.

NBC News reported that Martin said the report “does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards,” and that he was releasing it “as we received it, in its entirety, unedited and unabridged.”

Haaretz said the DNC report did not include a single mention of Israel, Gaza or the Palestinians, despite speculation that such issues led to both Kamala Harris' defeat and the failure to release the report.

Al Jazeera described the document as incomplete and inconclusive, adding that it was “riddled with factual mistakes and annotations questioning its assertions,” and said it was also light on policy recommendations and missing some sections.

RootsAction co-founder Jeff Cohen blasted the release, saying, “This alleged autopsy is almost worthless,” and adding, “There’s no mention of the Biden/Harris administration’s Israel policy that abetted the Gaza massacre.”

Al Jazeera reported that “there are zero mentions of Gaza and Israel in the 192 pages of the autopsy report,” and it said the document also lacked sections including the executive summary and conclusion.

The Guardian reported that Martin released the report accompanied by an apology and said it “fails to mention Gaza or Joe Biden’s age,” while also noting that the report “does not delve deeply into Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election at age 81.”

In the same Guardian account, Martin acknowledged the lack of comprehensive findings and cautioned that it would not “meet your standards,” while also saying its release was dictated by the public’s need “to trust the Democratic party.”

The dispute over what the autopsy did and did not cover quickly became a test of trust inside the party, with NBC News describing strains within the Democratic National Committee after Martin’s earlier reversal and his later apology to members.

NBC News said Martin told DNC members that Paul Rivera, the report author, no longer “is with or advises the DNC in any capacity,” and it reported that Martin did not give an option for members to weigh in on the matter.

The Guardian said the report focuses on key demographics Harris lost and compares her performance to other Democrats in key state races, including North Carolina governor Josh Stein, while also stating that the autopsy “does not engage with the criticism that racism and sexism were a factor in Harris’s loss.”

Al Jazeera framed the stakes as political and organizational, noting that for months the DNC faced calls from activists to release the report and that Martin said continuing to withhold it would have been a bigger distraction than releasing it “in its current state.”
