Trump’s “Trump Strait” push
US President Donald Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait,” writing, “Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” amid near-daily Iranian attacks on ships in the area.

The Al Jazeera report tied the proposal to the timing of US strikes on Iran, saying Trump’s suggestion came less than 24 hours after the US struck several targets in Iran, killing at least four people, including two children, at a wedding in the southern city of Sirik.
Al Jazeera also reported that Iran responded to Tuesday’s attack with missile launches against US bases in the region, and that the fighting pushed oil prices upwards by around 4 percent.
In a separate account, ABNA said Bernie Sanders reacted to Trump’s post by writing on X, “They want you to end your illegal war in Iran, a war that has driven diesel prices up to $5.69 a gallon and gasoline to $4.12 a gallon...”.
ABNA further stated that “information from international circles indicates that Iran still maintains full control over this strategic strait,” and that navigation is carried out under Iran’s security regulations.
Competing claims on control
Al Jazeera reported that Iran continues to maintain that the waterway is closed and under its control, while the US asserts the Strait of Hormuz is open and that millions of barrels of oil are transiting through it daily.
The BBC described Trump’s stance that the campaign against Iran “won’t last long,” and said he argued that “oil prices will not come down until then,” while also asking, “Since it is now under U.S. control, should we change the name of the Hormuz Strait to the Trump Strait?”B
Al-Jazeera’s account of the dispute also included the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) monitoring agency, which has been reporting attacks on vessels in Hormuz almost every day.
In a separate narrative focused on numbers, Al-Jazirah Net said Lloyd’s List Intelligence recorded “only 6 ships crossed the strait yesterday, 11 on Tuesday, and 5 on Monday,” and noted that the ten-day daily average stood at 13 ships.
Al-Jazirah Net also quoted Bridgit Diakon saying the data may be incomplete because “some of which are forced to switch off tracking devices to avoid targeting,” and it contrasted that with Washington’s higher figures.
Escalation, elections, and fallout
Trump told reporters that the Iran war would end “immediately” after the Nov. 3 US midterm elections, saying, “I think the war will end immediately after the election because they can't hold out any longer,” and he added that Washington was not looking for negotiations with Tehran.

Al-Khaleej said the UAE strongly condemned Iranian aggression targeting neighboring Jordan with missiles, and it reported that Jordan’s air defenses intercepted and destroyed 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched toward the Kingdom’s lands.
In the same Al-Khaleej account, the IAEA Board of Governors voted on Wednesday to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council over its noncompliance with its nuclear obligations, “in a move that aims to increase pressure on Tehran,” according to diplomats.
