The controversy sharpened when viewers questioned whether Green had used AI in educational content, after a 55-minute episode of Ask Hank Anything featuring creator Soupytime was uploaded to the Complexly YouTube channel on July 30.
Green told followers he had used ChatGPT for research on the script, and he said he was "relying too much on generated notes" while working under "a ton of pressure," according to The Express Tribune.
As backlash grew, Green said he was "mortified" to have disappointed viewers and announced he would pause or post less frequently across his YouTube channels, including SMUSH and 4×3, while he reassesses his workload.

The dispute began after a clip from the Ask Hank Anything episode circulated online, with some viewers claiming Green appeared to be reading language generated by ChatGPT during a "Future Hank" segment.
Green responded by reviewing his notes and script and insisting the disputed line had not come from ChatGPT, while confirming he had used the chatbot during research and calling it "a bad habit" that developed while he was overcommitted.
In his Reddit apology, Green wrote, "I promise you, you are still getting my takes based on what I read, know, and learn," and he said he used AI to locate academic papers and other resources rather than to form his opinions.
Business Insider reported that Green told fans to expect fewer videos, writing, "Expect less hankschannel. It may need to pause for a while," and it said he also planned to pause SMUSH and 4x3.
Green also said his wife, Katherine, and his brother, John Green, had expressed concerns, and he described his need to manage his impulses after saying, "It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this," in his apology.
