Detentions at White Memorial

Federal immigration agents detained two people late Friday near Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital in Boyle Heights after a person in federal custody was brought to the emergency department for treatment. Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman said officers responded to maintain public safety and keep the peace, adding, "At no point did LAPD officers assist federal immigration authorities with enforcement activities or detain any individuals in connection with immigration enforcement."

ICE said it does not conduct enforcement operations at hospitals, schools or churches, and the agency stated, "ICE does not target hospitals, schools or churches." Protesters gathered outside the hospital into the early hours of Saturday, and videos described masked officers restraining one individual while ordering bystanders to stay back and an officer saying the person was being arrested for "assaulting a federal agent."

Raman, Durazo, and CHIRLA

Mayor-elect Nithya Raman condemned the operation and told protesters, "What happened last night at this hospital was an affront to the wishes of the American people and the people of Los Angeles," while she later posted on X that she condemned what she described as "reckless actions" by the Trump administration.

California state Sen. María Elena Durazo criticized both ICE and hospital leadership, saying federal agents had "no justification" for their actions and urging White Memorial Hospital to strengthen protections for immigrant patients.

Abraham Zavala said ICE agents maced him and others in the crowd, and he told CBS News, "They were occupying four spaces."

Angelica Salas of CHIRLA said the enforcement had to "abide by human rights, by constitutional rights," as protesters marched from Mariachi Plaza to the hospital on Cesar E. Chavez Avenue on Saturday.

Hospital access and next steps

Adventist Health White Memorial said federal agents formed a line across its ambulance entrance, which the hospital said it did not request nor authorize, and the hospital stated it diverted ambulances to nearby hospitals for about two hours to ensure timely care. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the overnight presence outside the ambulance bay, writing that it effectively "sealing off a critical entrance," and she called on the Trump administration to stop immigration enforcement in and around health care facilities.

“White Memorial does not participate in immigration enforcement.”

ICE rejected accusations that it targeted a hospital and maintained that assaults against its officers have sharply increased under the Trump administration, while the agency said its statement was "another false narrative" to demonize its law enforcement. The dispute left community groups pressing for accountability and transparency, with MyNewsLA reporting that Raman and other elected leaders demanded "accountability and transparency" around the actions and the hospital’s response.
