Ramming near Ramallah
Israel’s ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter said his son, a soldier, was injured in an alleged car-ramming incident west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. Israeli police said a Palestinian man was shot dead after what they described as a car-ramming attack that injured a soldier at a checkpoint at an intersection near the illegal Israeli settlement of Beit Horon.
Shaare Zedek Hospital said the soldier underwent a complex surgery, and his life remains at risk. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the wounded soldier in hospital before departing for the United States to his planned address to the United Nations General Assembly, according to his office.
Competing accounts of the incident
Israeli police stated that the attacker directed his car at a police patrol, rammed one of its crew members, causing serious injuries, and they said the attacker was killed by gunfire from the forces. The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the suspected attacker as 29-year-old Mahmoud Mohammad Mahmoud Suleiman, adding that Israeli authorities were holding his body.
Channel 14 quoted a source saying that the injured soldier in the ramming attack is the son of Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yitzhak Leiter, while the Israeli army said the injured person was a soldier from its ranks inside a police vehicle near the Beit Horon military checkpoint within the Benjamin Brigade. Netanyahu wrote on X, “I recently visited the dear family of Neria Leiter…I ask you to pray for the recovery of Neria Dov ben Chana.”
Closures and wider escalation
Israeli forces closed Route 443, one of the main corridors leading to Jerusalem between the Makabim checkpoint and Beit Horon in both directions, and urged Israelis to avoid the area. The Jerusalem Governorate reported that occupation forces closed the Jaba, Hizma, and Anata checkpoints north of occupied Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Center for Media and Information said the Israeli forces closed all entrances and exits to the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate following the incident, and it said the closures caused residents to be detained and their movement obstructed. The Palestinian Center for Media and Information also recorded six “qualitative” operations since the beginning of September through the 20th of the month, varying between shooting, stabbing, ramming, and armed clashes.
