Eight homes seized near Jericho

Israeli settlers seized eight Palestinian homes in the Diyuk neighborhood west of Jericho, east of the West Bank, on Wednesday evening, with the protection of the Israeli occupation army. Bedar Organization for Rights reported that eight settler families entered the eight homes after taking them over “in mysterious circumstances,” raising concerns about escalation of settlement activity inside the city of Jericho.

Yedioth Ahronoth reported that eight Jewish families entered the homes in an area classified as Area C after a “secret purchase operation” led by the settlement movement Nahalat, with support of the settler council in the middle of the West Bank. Peace Now told Yedioth Ahronoth that activists in the area reported that at noon about 30 settlers, some armed, accompanied by soldiers, arrived at Ain al-Diyuk and seized several homes, attacked Israeli activists, robbed them, and opened fire at a Palestinian man in the leg.

IDF, outpost, and warnings

Several dozen settler activists took up residence in eight homes in the Palestinian city of Jericho, which they said they purchased with the cooperation of the Benyamin Regional Council, a state-funded settlement municipal authority. Israel Ganz said the step was part of efforts to “dismantle the Oslo Accords,” adding, “We are dismantling the Oslo Accords through our actions — house by house, family by family,”.

The IDF criticized the uncoordinated arrival of Jewish families at homes near the West Bank city of Jericho, saying Wednesday's move caught both the military and Division 96 by surprise. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said: "The entry into the homes was carried out without prior coordination with the IDF and without authorization."

Palestinians, injuries, and risks

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society announced that it transferred a Palestinian and a foreign activist who were assaulted by settlers in Diyuk to the hospital. Two people, including a Palestinian and a foreign activist, were injured in an attack by Israeli settlers west of Jericho in the occupied West Bank, and the settlers also stormed and seized eight houses during the incident.

Peace Now described the development as “a security danger and diplomatic catastrophe” and said it will create “apartheid” inside Jericho, according to The Times of Israel. Two Jericho residents who live in the area told it that the settlers blocked off the area when they entered their new homes, and that the IDF has not allowed Palestinian residents to return to dozens of homes in the area or to the surrounding agricultural land.
